Dating behaviour online is similar to dating in real life | Dating Sites

A researcher has discovered that individuals who tell white lies on online dating sites are out to please people and they wish to show themselves off in the best possible way to get others to take a liking to to them.

It was also revealed that there is a similar behaviour pattern if the same individuals were engaging in dating encounters in the more customary, face-to-face capacity.

Geoffrey Hall, a researcher from Kansas University and a professor of Communication Studies conducted a survey of more than 5,000 people in a nationally based Internet matchmaking site to find out what sorts of individuals are more likely to tell lies throughout the internet dating procedure.

He questioned them on how often they would tell lies about subjects like the ownership of assets, goals for a successful relationship, individual interests, personal features, previous relationships, weight and age.

Hall recalled that whether people lie and what they lie about depends on the sort of person they are. Their circumstances also do not alter the way they see themselves in relation to others.

He stated that a person who seems extroverted may simply try to forget the number of previous relationships they have experienced as there is the likelihood that they would have experienced far more relationships that a person who is more introverted.

Those who are more likely to tell lies while engaging in an online dating experience are people who have a clear feeling as to what other people prefer and take control over their behaviour in order to meet their social needs. The way they act not always by use of manipulation, Hall said, but they prefer to fulfill the need to be liked and approved.

The results of Hall?s research was published in last months Journal of Social and Personal Relationships and is one of a string of studies that have surveyed online dating site member attitudes to certain aspects of human behaviour.

In the survey, men appeared to lie more on average, but females were more likely to tell lies regarding their weight. It seems that online daters expect to encounter face-to-face meetings eventually; therefore the amount of lying is really not that important.
