Grizzly robot EV shrugs off difficult terrain, laughs at heavy loads

Grizzly robot EV laughs at your puny Earth terrain

Like its namesake, Clearpath Robotic's Grizzly is most comfortable in the wild. Sure, this unmanned ATV is perfectly capable of handling paved streets. But the 26-inch wheels and eight-inches of ground clearance are really built for offroad excursions. The 80-horsepower all-electric motor is capable of reaching speeds of 11 mph and of towing loads over 1,300 pounds. In short, this thing is beast. Clearpath suggests the bot would excel at agricultural tasks, but it seems to us that plowing fields would be a waste of Grizzly's skills. Unless, of course, those fields happened to be on another planet. To see this mobile monster in action check out the gallery below and the video after the break.

Sequoia Capital In Singapore After A Year, Has Yet To Invest In A Local Startup

Singapore skylineWhen Sequoia Capital India landed in Singapore quietly in 2012, the buzz around town was that a big-name US fund being in the country was going to really jolt the market and provide serious cred to the startups here. The Indian team running operations here, however, appears to have spent the last year of its time in the island state helping startups in its India portfolio expand into Singapore, rather than directly investing in startups here. However, the company just moved into a fancy?new co-working space called? The Co, and is its anchor tenant, so it could be a sign that it?s trying to get closer to local startups. Previously, it?operated out of a service office in High Street. Singapore is a popular choice as a base for foreign companies looking to expand into Southeast Asia, because it’s a mature market with plenty of infrastructure available. But as a tiny country, it’s not often the main addressable user base, and startups originating from Singapore are also taught to have expansion plans charted. Early last year, Sequoia Capital India MD, Shailendra Jit Singh, expressed interest in having the fund?s companies expand into the region. Sequoia Cap in the US also appeared to have been eyeing activity in Singapore for a while?it had its first offsite meeting in the country in 2011, and was in discussion with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong about its presence here. The Prime Minister?s Office oversees its R&D arm, the National Research Foundation (NRF), which has been busy backing local venture capital firms here over the past few years. Its Technology Incubation Scheme is a program that distributes seed funding to startups picked by 11 NRF-appointed VCs. The NRF matches investment values in the proportion of 85 percent to 15 percent?the larger portion dished out by the government. This allows the VCs here to provide bigger sums of seed capital to startups, with much of the risk absorbed by the NRF. Former NRF projects head, Yinglan Tan, was also pulled over to Sequoia Capital India?s team in July last year, where he is now a venture partner based in Singapore. When I ran into Tan in Manila a couple of months ago, he was evasive about Sequoia’s activities in Singapore, but was happy to try to set up meetings with their existing portfolio companies in Singapore?all Indian-based startups, except for Airbnb and Evernote. Scorsese developing 'Gangs of New York' TV series

NEW YORK (AP) ? Martin Scorsese is developing a TV series based on his 2002 film "Gangs of New York."

The director is partnering with Miramax, which released the Oscar-nominated film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis. The planned show doesn't yet have a TV network.

The series expands on the brutal, 19th-century New York gang world of the film. Miramax says the series will chronicle the birth of organized crime in not just New York but also in cities such as Chicago and New Orleans.

In a statement Thursday, Scorsese says the era was too rich to fully explore in a two-hour film. He says the series "allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life."

S. Africa's Zuma to join summit on Central African Republic

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African President Jacob Zuma will attend a summit of central African heads of state in Chad on Wednesday which will consider responses to the rebel takeover in Central African Republic.

The South African leader was invited by Chadian President Idriss Deby, chair of the 10-nation Economic Community of Central African States, to join the extraordinary ECCAS summit in N'Djamena on April 3, Zuma's spokesman Mac Maharaj said.

South Africa is facing questions about its role in Central African Republic after 13 of its soldiers were killed there last weekend as they fought alongside government troops trying to prevent rebels from ousting President Francois Bozize from power.

The opposition in South Africa and regional analysts have asked why a South African military training mission in Central African Republic became directly entangled in the internal conflict there.

South African media reports have suggested the soldiers were defending South African mining interests in a country rich in diamonds, uranium and oil, but officials in Pretoria have denied this. They say the presence of the 400 South African troops was covered by a 2007 bilateral defence accord with Bozize.

Maharaj told Reuters there was nothing unusual about the South African role in Central African Republic or Zuma's participation in the extraordinary ECCAS summit in Chad.

"We want to participate and benefit from the knowledge of the colleagues in the region, and share our ideas," he said.

Zuma would be accompanied at the summit by his ministers for foreign affairs, state security and defence.

On Friday, Central African Republic's new president, rebel leader Michel Djotodia, said he would review resource deals signed by the previous government and promised to step down at elections in 2016.

Djotodia was responding to questions about resource licences awarded to Chinese and South African firms by Bozize.

He added he would seek aid from former colonial power France and the United States to retrain the ill-disciplined army, a statement which appeared to be a blow to South African aspirations to maintain a role in Central African Republic.

Maharaj said South Africa's involvement there stemmed from calls by the African Union in the mid-2000s for African states to participate actively in moves to maintain stability and contribute to capacity-building in the central African state, which has a history of coups and revolts.

He said the 2007 bilateral defence accord, whose details have not been made public, derived directly from this.

Following the rebel takeover, the African Union suspended Central African Republic's membership and imposed sanctions on the rebel leaders, including Djotodia.

ECCAS groups Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe and Chad.

Storify Announces A Paid VIP Plan With Liveblogging And Collaboration Features, Partners With BBC

storify logoStorify has become a useful tool for media organizations trying to capture newsworthy or entertaining social media conversations for their readers, with its ability to combine tweets, photos, and more into an embeddable conversation. Today the company is announcing a VIP plan with features designed specifically for "media organizations, publishers or anyone wanting to deeply integrate social curation and storytelling into their site." The plan includes the ability to update a Storify story in real-time (useful for live blogging), to customize the appearance of a story with CSS, to receive priority technical support, add custom sources, and to share stories privately. Co-founder Burt Herman told me via email that the first two features will probably make the biggest difference for readers, while the private sharing could be useful for newsroom collaboration, and also for communication within companies and PR agencies. (So for example if a brand becomes embroiled in a big social media controversy, Storify might be a good way for an agency to capture what's going on, but that's probably not something they'd want to highlight publicly.)

Incoming Real Racing 3 update includes new race mode and Chevrolet cars

Android Central at GDC

We got a sneak peek at an as-yet-unreleased content updated for the free-to-play Real Racing 3 on Android at GDC 2013. The next big update, due to launch this spring, will include cloud saving support, a new hunter race mode where players need to beat a specific car in a single lap, and introduce a new lineup of Chevrolet vehicles, including the Camaro.

I also got to needle the Firemonkeys community manager a bit about their decision to switch over from a premium price point to free to play, and he was generally pretty classy about how they're listening to consumer feedback and making sure their implementation isn't unbalancing.

Any real racers in the house? How have you found the game so far? Any particular changes you'd like to see in the next patch?

Austrian police chase herd of cows through town

(AP) ? Austrian police and firefighters have taken on the role of urban cowboys in a two-day round-up of a herd of cows that broke out of a fenced-off pasture and decided to go into town.

A police statement says the 43 animals defied attempts by police and volunteer firefighters to recapture them after wandering off Thursday and heading toward the Upper Austrian town of Freistadt. After being chased away from the railway station, they endangered motorists by stampeding onto a two-lane highway before running into a town suburb.

Two firefighters who tried to stop them were injured and needed hospital treatment.

The statement says 18 of the animals remain on the loose Friday. The rest have been corralled or tranquilized.

Stressful life events may increase stillbirth risk, study finds

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Pregnant women who experienced financial, emotional, or other personal stress in the year before their delivery had an increased chance of having a stillbirth, say researchers who conducted a National Institutes of Health network study.

Stillbirth is the death of a fetus at 20 or more weeks of pregnancy. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, in 2006, there was one stillbirth for every 167 births.

The researchers asked more than 2,000 women a series of questions, including whether they had lost a job or had a loved one in the hospital in the year before they gave birth.

Whether or not the pregnancy ended in stillbirth, most women reported having experienced at least one stressful life event in the previous year. The researchers found that 83 percent of women who had a stillbirth and 75 percent of women who had a live birth reported a stressful life event. Almost 1 in 5 women with stillbirths and 1 in 10 women with livebirths in this study reported recently experiencing 5 or more stressful life events. This study measured the occurrence of a list of significant life events, and did not include the woman's assessment of how stressful the event was to her.

Women reporting a greater number of stressful events were more likely to have a stillbirth. Two stressful events increased a woman's odds of stillbirth by about 40 percent, the researchers' analysis showed. A woman experiencing five or more stressful events was nearly 2.5 times more likely to have a stillbirth than a woman who had experienced none. Women who reported three or four significant life event factors (financial, emotional, traumatic or partner-related) remained at increased risk for stillbirth after accounting for other stillbirth risk factors, such as sociodemographic characteristics and prior pregnancy history.

Non-Hispanic black women were more likely to report experiencing stressful events than were non-Hispanic white women and Hispanic women. Black women also reported a greater number of stressful events than did their white and Hispanic counterparts. This finding may partly explain why black women have higher rates of stillbirth than non-Hispanic white or Hispanic women, the researchers said.

"We documented how significant stressors are highly prevalent in pregnant women's lives," said study co-author Marian Willinger, Ph.D., acting chief of the Pregnancy and Perinatology Branch of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), one of two NIH entities funding the research. "This reinforces the need for health care providers to ask expectant mothers about what is going on in their lives, monitor stressful life events and to offer support as part of prenatal care."

The NIH Office of Research in Women's Health also funded the study.

"Because 1 in 5 pregnant women has three or more stressful events in the year leading up to delivery, the potential public health impact of effective interventions could be substantial and help increase the delivery of healthy babies," added lead author Dr. Carol Hogue, Terry Professor of Maternal and Child Health at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health, Atlanta.

Dr. Willinger collaborated with colleagues at the NICHD and Emory University; Drexel University School of Medicine, Philadelphia; University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston; Children's Healthcare of Atlanta; Brown University School of Medicine, Providence, R.I.; University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio; University of Utah School of Medicine and Intermountain Healthcare, Salt Lake City; and RTI International, Research Triangle Park, N.C.

Their findings appear in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

The research was conducted by the NICHD-funded Stillbirth Collaborative Research Network (SCRN). The researchers contacted all women delivering a stillbirth as well as a representative portion of women delivering a live birth in defined counties in Georgia, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Texas and Utah. The women were enrolled in the study between 2006 and 2008 in 59 community and research hospitals.

Within 24 hours of either a live birth or a stillbirth delivery, the women in the study were asked about events grouped into four categories: emotional, financial, partner-related and traumatic. They answered yes or no to 13 scenarios, including the following:

  • I moved to a new address.
  • My husband or partner lost his job.
  • I was in a physical fight.
  • Someone very close to me died.

Some of the stressful events were more strongly associated with stillbirth than were others. For example, the risk of stillbirth was highest:

  • for women who had been in a fight (which doubled the chances for stillbirth)
  • if she had heard her partner say he didn't want her to be pregnant
  • if she or her partner had gone to jail in the year before the delivery

"At prenatal visits, screening is common for concerns such as intimate partner violence and depression, but the questions in our study were much more detailed," said co-author Uma Reddy, M.D., M.P.H., also of NICHD. "This is a first step toward cataloguing the effects of stress on the likelihood of stillbirth and, more generally, toward documenting how pregnancy influences a woman's mental health and how pregnancy is influenced by a woman's mental health."

University of Liverpool

Scientists at the University of Liverpool are embarking on a series of research cruises to understand the impact of climate warming on the ecosystems of the seas surrounding North West Europe.

The 3.2 million study focuses on the role that shelf-seas the seas surrounding continental land masses - play in the cycling of carbon and nutrients, and how warming of the seas might affect it. The study will be carried out on RRS Discovery, the Natural and Environmental Research Council's (NERC) new research vessel as well as other research and commercial vessels over a one-year period.

The shelf seas around the UK, which include the North Sea, English Channel, Celtic Sea, Irish Sea and seas around Scotland, have a variety of uses including oil and gas extraction, shipping, telecom and power cables, leisure and recreation, defence, fisheries, aquaculture, raw materials and renewable energy.

Liverpool's scientists are leading a cross-UK group of universities and research centres. The team will collect data from across the seas surrounding North West Europe to further understanding of the link between the physical and biogeochemical processes which take place in shelf seas and changes to the global carbon and nutrients cycle. They will measure levels of carbons and nutrients across the NW European shelf seas as well as the transportation of greenhouse gases between the shelf sea and the atmosphere, and the amount of carbon that is transported to the adjacent deep ocean.

Despite accounting for only 5% of the global ocean area, shelf seas are thought to be responsible for about 30% of the annual absorption of atmospheric CO2 by the ocean, therefore playing a critical role in the ocean's ecosystems and the regulation of our climate. Their economic importance is significant, providing 90% of global fish catches and about 15% of the ocean's plant growth.

Professor Jonathan Sharples, from the School of Environmental Sciences, said: "In a gradually warming climate, the capacity of shelf seas to support biological growth and to store carbon is expected to change. If we understand today's carbon and nutrient cycles then we can develop better modelling systems which will contribute to our understanding of the effects of climate warming on the oceans and the role shelf seas could play in altering greenhouse gases in the atmosphere." More follows

Partners in the project, funded by NERC, include University of Southampton; University of East Anglia, Bangor University; University of Aberdeen; National Oceanography Research Centre; Plymouth Marine Laboratory; Scottish Association for Marine Science; and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS).

Listrak Publishes Whitepaper on Segmented Email Marketing Best ...

Lititz, PA (PRWEB) March 08, 2013

Listrak, an innovator of eCommerce email marketing solutions, recently released a whitepaper, Segmented Email Marketing Campaigns Best Practices. The whitepaper outlines how eCommerce retailers can target customers using data from purchase history to increase customer lifetime value and ROI.

In the whitepaper, Listrak reports that the average consumer is inundated with 45 emails and at least 30,000 branded marketing messages a day, leaving email marketers to cut through the clutter to get their messages noticed. The advantage for email marketers is that in 2012 email was still the number one channel customers respond to and the most popular online activity. In addition, in 2012 email returned $ 40 for every dollar spent, significantly beating out keyword and banner ads, and at 5%, its conversion rate beat out search and social, as well.

The study warns, however, that eCommerce retailers who are simply batching and blasting or sending the same message to their entire list are in danger of damaging their reputations and deliverability, as marketers account for the majority of all spam complaints and spam trap hits. In the report, Listrak outlines how batch and blast campaigns should be used instead to augment more segmented, relevant campaigns.

The study suggests that e-Commerce retailers use the purchase data available to them to create highly-targeted email campaigns. Listraks Advanced Retail Segmentation, for example, allows merchants to segment on purchase data such as spend, purchase dates, categories, skus, average order value and more.

Listrak CEO Ross Kramer explains, eCommerce retailers have a goldmine of purchase data

available to them that they can use to segment their email lists and market to past purchasers in highly targeted, relevant ways. Predictive analytics not only help e-tailers to create email messages that result in increased conversions, ROI and customer lifetime value, but that also enhance the customers experience with the merchant.

The study notes that Advanced Retail Segmentation may be used to increase the conversions and ROI of many types of email marketing campaigns, including shopping cart abandonment, post-purchase and re-engagement.

Listraks Segmented Email Marketing Best Practices whitepaper may be downloaded here.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) - It appears more and more likely that Johan Santana will be headed to the disabled list after the New York Mets again pushed back the schedule for their ace to make his spring training debut.

Santana didn't pitch in the major leagues in 2011 following shoulder surgery, then went 6-9 with a 4.85 ERA in 21 starts last year, when he pitched the first no-hitter in Mets history on June 1 against St. Louis. The 33-year-old left-hander didn't pitch after Aug. 17 because of lower back inflammation and did not throw much during the offseason.

The Mets say he doesn't have enough arm strength for exhibition games.

"Right now, it's day to day with Johan," Mets manager Terry Collins said after Saturday's 9-6 win over the Houston Astros. "We certainly would hope something next week, but if it's not, it's not. Again, part of our conversation is, he's ready when he's ready."

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson had said March 2 that Santana needed 10 more days to build up arm strength before he could appear in a spring training game.

Santana did not work out with the team Saturday, instead opting to do more arm and shoulder stretches inside the training complex.

Collins already has looked at the schedule for the first week of the season, which includes a day off on April 2 following the opener against San Diego.

"We've been trying to look down the road," Collins said. "Due to the day off, the one day off, be it the case that Jo is not one of those first five guys, we don't need a fifth guy until the seventh. Again, we're just taking it day by day right now."

If Santana is put on the 15-day DL during spring training, the earliest he could be activated would be April 7.

Mets starter Jeremy Hefner could be a beneficiary of Santana's health issues and take over a starting slot early in the season. Hefner allowed one hit in three scoreless innings against Houston.

"The last couple outings, continuing back to about his last two or three starts last year, he's been outstanding," Collins said. "His command has been very good, his change of speeds have been good; he's done a nice job. Certainly coming into this camp, in a lot of people's minds, he was our No. 6 guy. Certainly he's going to continue to pitch and if we need a guy, we know he's going to be ready."

Hefner is not preparing any differently because of Santana's arm issue.

"Obviously it hinges on Johan, how he feels and that type of thing," Hefner said. "I only can control me, my approach and my bullpens and that's what I'm going to continue to do and let Johan rehab and continue to do what he needs to do to pitch. I go into every spring hoping to make the big league team and that didn't change this offseason, this spring. That's the ultimate goal and whatever happens will happen."

Hefner, who threw two more simulated innings after leaving Saturday's game, got help from center fielder Matt den Dekker, who made a sliding grab on the warning track of Trevor Crowe's long fly ball in the third inning, catching the ball in the webbing of his glove.

Lucas Duda and John Buck drove in two runs each and Ike Davis scored three times. Duda went 3 for 3 with a double, while Buck had two hits and increased his spring training RBIs total to seven. Davis was 2 for 2 with a walk, stolen base and a RBI.

Duda, who has been working on a new swing this spring, went 3-for-3 with a double. Collins said he can see Duda starting to get into a rhythm at the plate.

"I feel good," said Duda, who has changed the mechanics on his swing. "I'm working hard every day. I'm working hard with my swing every day, trying to get better. (This) is just one day. I'll just continue to work hard in (batting practice)."

Houston's Carlos Pena hit a two-run homer in the fourth. Astros starter Alex White gave up four runs and five hits in 2 2-3 innings.

"I threw a lot of strikes, made some really good pitches, gave up some hits that were not hit really well and that's going to happen," White said. "I threw a lot of strikes, that's a big key for me. I feel good about the outing. Obviously, the numbers aren't what I want them to be, but, once again, it's a little early."

NOTES: Astros RHP Lucas Harrell will not make his scheduled start against the Phillies on Sunday due to discomfort in his right groin. Houston manager Bo Porter said Harrell likely would have pitched during the regular season. ... Astros LHP Eric Bedard (right glute) threw off a mound. He has not pitched since his spring training debut on Feb. 26. ... Collins said CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis (knee) could play Wednesday and 2B Daniel Murphy (strained intercostal muscle) could make his spring training debut next week.

Newly recognized heart cardiomyopathy is not always benign

Mar. 9, 2013 ? Even though a newly recognized cardiomyopathy, which mainly impacts women, is typically treatable, Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy can also be deadly when compounded by other co-morbidities, such as heart failure, according to a study being presented March 9 at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Scientific Sessions.

This condition, formally known as Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) and informally known as stress cardiomyopathy or broken heart syndrome, has abrupt onset of symptoms and is characterized by a distinctive left ventricular (LV) contraction profile. Ninety percent of the time, this condition affects women, who are usually middle aged and older, and the condition usually is triggered by a stressful event.

"Although TTC is typically reversible and considered to have favorable clinical outcomes, we have identified an important subset of patients, particularly those with severe heart failure and hypotension, who can have a substantial mortality risk," says the study's lead author Scott W. Sharkey, MD, a research cardiologist at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation and a physician at the Minneapolis Heart Institute? at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. "It's also important that physicians are aware this is not a rare a condition, as it is present in nearly 10 percent of women who present to the hospital with suspected heart attacks."

MHIF researchers reviewed 250 TTC patients who presented to the Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital between 2001 and 2012. Then, they segregated those TTC patients presenting with particularly severe heart failure and very low pressure, or hypotension (systolic blood pressure < 100 mm Hg), who required supportive treatment.

They found that severe hypotensive heart failure occurred in 45 patients. In this subset, 9 female patients died in-hospital despite aggressive treatment intervention, representing the only TTC-related hospital deaths in the 250 patient cohort.

Therefore, Sharkey and his colleagues concluded that TTC is not necessarily a benign condition. Severe hypotensive heart failure of severity necessitating vasopressor and/or intra-aortic balloon pump occurs in nearly 20 percent of patients. Also, all TTC-related hospital deaths occurred in the hypotensive heart failure subgroup with an overall mortality of 3.5 percent.

Importantly, triggering physical stressors related to severe co-morbid non-cardiac conditions (8) or advanced age (1) were present in all 9 non-survivors, Sharkey notes.

"Unfortunately, there are not any guidelines or criteria to instruct diagnosis and treatment of these patients at this time," says Sharkey. "Therefore, this study could be a starting point for this process, as it provides a more complete profile of the clinical spectrum of TTC and provides useful guidance for the effective management of these acutely ill patients."

To raise additional awareness and improve care of these patients, he adds that guidelines would be helpful at this time, in order to standardize diagnosis and treatment across varied healthcare settings.

San Diego Teens and Women Kick Butt for a Cause | The Chocolate ...

?

(San Diego, CA) Tinesia Conwright of DETOUR Empowers and creator of F.A.N.C.Y. Teen Girls Expo hosted a women?s and teens self-defense class with the help of Divas In Defense, an organization empowering women of all ages with the training and tools imperative to their personal safety and the safety of their families. This weekend?s event was educational and entertaining as close to 20 teens and women gathered at The San Diego Dance Theater in an effort to kick butt for a cause. We learned everything from how to react in a purse snatching incident to the options available if ever being held at gunpoint. This weekend?s fundraiser benefited two local non-profit agencies, F.A.N.C.Y Teen Girls Expo and Eleanor?s Place for Women.

According to Divas In Defense, ?1 in 3 women are murdered by an intimate partner, 1 in 4 college women will face a rape situation, 1 in 6 women will be a victim of assault and 1 in 87 women take a self-defense class.? With numbers this staggering, Tinesia Conwright hit the nail on the head bringing awareness to teens and women on why and how they should to defend themselves. Chris Britto, Founder and CEO of Divas In Defense shared, ?Our goal is to teach you how to get out of a dangerous situation as quickly and safely as possible, fighting is always a last resort.?

Tinesia became passionate about women?s empowerment over five years ago when starting her non-profit organization.? The women?s self-defense class today supported her mission and raised funds for worthy causes simultaneously. ??This event was an excellent way to educate women on ways to defend themselves against an attack, raise awareness regarding sexual assaults against women and to support organizations who provide services for women and girls within Southeast San Diego? states Ms. Conwright.

The group of women gathered today shared similar sentiments and most of them agreed that a self-defense course is necessary and they?d love to take one again! Local resident and registered nurse, Aerain Bordeaux, shared that ?The best part of today was learning the different ways I can move my body in order to get out of a physically restraining circumstance. Today gave me perspective on being aware of my surroundings.? There were a few mother?s who brought their teen daughters along to learn the valuable lessons taught today. ?The class was empowering. I think this was the best gift that I could have given my daughter.? The gift of self-defense. The little tips we get to take home may very well save our lives.? tearfully stated, mother of two, Johnique Woods. Johnique?s daughter mentioned that she feels better prepared if anything ever happened and that she would encourage all her friends to learn these skills.

Local business owners came out to support the cause and to learn a tip or two in defending themselves. ?I have always wanted to take a self-defense class and the way this one was promoted caught my eye. Not to mention supporting the two causes that are near and dear to my heart.? shares Ghia Ransome, owner of Mz. Impeckable Inc. Briget Winton of Briget?s Essence of Beauty Hair Salon was on hand to join in on the festivities. ?It was important to me as a single woman to know how to defend myself. I have been mugged before, but I was much younger, so now I wanted to learn new skills on how to get myself out of a dangerous situation if that should ever happen again. I can?t wait to go home and practice what I learned today!?

We were fortunate to be taught by Chris Britto, who shared that he and his brother decided to start Divas In Defense three years ago after being raised by a mother who was a victim of domestic violence. Both he and his brother are father?s to daughters and believe that it is important for a woman to know how to protect themselves.

Chris brought along t-shirts and self-defense tools like pepper spray and stun guns for purchase. ?He also shared a few quick tips for all women to take heed.

9 Protection Tips for Women

  1. Trust your women?s intuition. Feel free to voice your concern if in an uncomfortable situation. You don?t have to deal with anything that makes you uneasy.
  2. Stay away from dark alleys and street. Walk in a group if possible.
  3. Scan your surroundings. Pause. Look around again, especially when at an ATM.
  4. If ever being attacked, yell ?Fire!? or ?My baby! My baby!? Statistics prove that people go the opposite way when a victim is yelling ?Help.?
  5. Don?t sit in your car in the parking lot and text.
  6. Take front and back photo copies of all ID?s and credit cards. In case they are stolen, you will have the 800#?s needed to call banks, etc.
  7. If held at gunpoint, give them what they want. Also, keep your ID?s on your body (in bra or in pockets) when going out.? If an attacker gets your purse, then he won?t know where you live.
  8. Don?t talk on cell phone when out alone, walking to your car, leaving gym or grocery store, etc. It automatically cuts off 50% of your hearing and vision. You must be aware!
  9. Women with small children ? put the groceries in the car before the children. You?d rather an attacker get the car and groceries instead of the car and your child.

Fundraiser profits supported: DETOUR Empowers, an organization that uplifts, motivates and inspires women and girls to work towards self-development and self-improvement, while surrounding themselves with positive reinforcements. Eleanor?s Place for Women, an organization that provides transitional housing, clothing and mentoring to teens and women coming out of jail, drug programs and domestic violence.

WACO, Texas (AP) ? Pierre Jackson had 28 points and 10 assists as Baylor finished the regular season with an 81-58 victory over Kansas on Saturday to keep the fourth-ranked Jayhawks from the outright Big 12 regular-season title.

Cory Jefferson added 25 points for Baylor (18-13, 9-9 Big 12), the 6-foot-9 junior forward combining his usual powerful dunks with his first three career 3-pointers.

Even after its worst loss in seven years, Kansas (26-5, 14-4) will still be the No. 1 seed for next week's conference tournament in Kansas City, and now has at least a share of the last nine Big 12 regular-season titles. The Jayhawks had won the previous four outright, but have to share this one with rival Kansas State.

Ben McLemore had 23 points for Kansas, whose only lead came when the freshman made a layup only 5 seconds into the game.

The Jayhawks, who had a seven-game winning streak, knew they already had at least a piece of the Big 12 title after ninth-ranked Kansas State (25-6, 14-4) lost 76-70 earlier Saturday at No. 13 Oklahoma State. But the KU loss gave the rival Wildcats a share of their first regular-season conference title since 1977 in the Big Eight.

McLemore scored off the opening tip, but that gave the Jayhawks no momentum. Baylor scored the next six points, including a two-handed slam dunk by Jefferson, and never trailed again.

Kansas used an 11-0 run in the second half to get within 61-55 with 6:23 left after consecutive baskets by Perry Ellis, who finished with 12 points.

But Jackson then stole a ball from McLemore, and Baylor's point guard drove for a layup made between two defenders. After Ellis missed a shot, Jackson got the ball and made a pass ahead to Brady Heslip for an easy layup.

The Bears kept piling on after that, and because of that could still have a shot at an at-large NCAA berth with a couple of wins at the Big 12 tournament.

Baylor had lost six of its previous seven games and was already locked in as the No. 6 seed in the Big 12 tournament. The Bears play Oklahoma State on Thursday night in Kansas City ? they split their two regular-season matchups.

Kansas, which has won an NCAA-best 56 overall conference regular-season titles, plays Thursday against the West Virginia-Texas Tech winner.

Jackson and Jefferson both made 11 of 13 field goals. A.J. Walton added 12 points for Baylor and Isaiah Austin had 11 for Baylor.

Jefferson had a pair of early dunks before hitting the first 3-pointer of his career for a 22-13 lead. He was 0 for 7 from long range before that.

Jefferson had 18 points by halftime, including a 3-pointer for the last points of the half. That came on the possession right after he took a charging foul that wiped out a basket by Elijah Johnson.

Jackson had 13 points in the first half, including a quick spurt of seven points.

The Jayhawks had closed to 12-11 on a layup by Ellis with just under 14 minutes left before Jackson scored three times in a span of 1:16, hitting a jumper from the top of the key before a 3-pointer and then a layup.

Baylor's lead was 24-15 when Jefferson had a stutter-step move and made a short hook shot. Johnson then scored seven in a row for the Jayhawks, including a 3-pointer and a leaner when he got a roll before Jackson's baseline layup ended that spurt.

Bieber "under the weather", lunges at UK photographer

LONDON (Reuters) - Canadian pop star Justin Bieber was filmed lunging and shouting abuse at a photographer on Friday during an ill-fated stay in London which has gone from bad to worse after he collapsed on stage the day before.

The altercation, caught on camera and featured on popular celebrity news websites including TMZ, showed the 19-year-old get out of a van, try to move towards the unnamed member of the paparazzi and threaten him using several swear words.

He was reacting to the man's foul-mouthed criticism of him and his security team after the singer appeared to have made contact with the photographer as they moved towards the vehicle.

The bouncers held Bieber back, but the incident is likely to create yet more negative headlines for one of the world's biggest pop stars.

Bieber said he would go ahead with a scheduled Friday concert, the final of four gigs at London's O2 Arena, which had been in doubt after he collapsed on stage on Thursday after suffering from shortness of breath.

After a 20-minute break during which he was given oxygen by doctors, he completed his set but was later taken to hospital as a precaution.

"Justin has been released from the hospital after a check-up and while he's feeling a little under the weather, he's planning on going ahead with tonight's show," his spokesman said.

"ROUGH WEEK"

Since being discovered on YouTube in 2008, Bieber quickly built a huge following of mainly teenaged girls attracted to his clean-cut image, slick videos and catchy pop songs.

But the intense media spotlight which follows him around the world has clearly unnerved the "Boyfriend" singer.

Bieber has had several run-ins with paparazzi in recent years and took to Twitter this week to criticize the media for what he called fabricated stories about him during his stay in London, where he is performing his sold out "Believe" tour.

After the latest altercation, he returned to the micro-blogging site, where he has more than 35 million followers.

"Ahhhhh! Rough morning. Trying to feel better for this show tonight but let the paps get the best of me..." he wrote.

"Sometimes when people r shoving cameras in your face all day and yelling the worst thing possible at u ... well I'm human. Rough week.

"Not gonna let them get the best of me again. Gonna get focused on this show tonight. Adrenaline is high now. Gonna put it on the stage."

"POP BRAT"

Thursday's onstage collapse was not the first for Bieber.

He suffered concussion during a concert in Paris last June after falling into a glass wall.

Bieber's illness came just days after he angered many fans by appearing for his first night at the O2 nearly two hours later than the advertised time.

The singer blamed technical issues for the delay, and said he was only 40 minutes behind schedule, but the media jumped on the story and the popular Sun tabloid referred to him in a March 7 story as "Pop brat Justin".

The tabloid attention has not been limited to the late show.

Newspapers described as "bizarre" his decision to wear a gas mask on a night out.

They also reported that Bieber, who celebrated his 19th birthday in London last week, tried to take 14-year-old Jaden Smith, son of actor Will Smith, to a club, where he was turned away, along with Bieber and his entourage.

Bieber took to Twitter and Instagram to vehemently deny the reports he tried to take underage Smith to a club, saying instead he was forced to leave the venue when the club's security guards behaved aggressively towards his fans who were lined up outside.

(AP) ? A suicide bomber on a bicycle struck outside the Afghan Defense Ministry on Saturday, one of two attacks that killed at least 18 people as U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel visited the nation, officials said.

Nine people were killed in the bombing at the ministry, a fresh reminder that insurgents continue to fight and challenges remain as the U.S.-led NATO force hands over the country's security to the Afghans.

About a half hour later, another suicide bomber attacked a police checkpoint in Khost, the capital of Khost province in eastern Afghanistan. An Afghan policeman and eight civilians, who were mostly children, died in that blast, said provincial spokesman Baryalai Wakman.

"We are still at war," Hagel said shortly before he arrived on Friday, the same day that three men wearing Afghan army uniforms and driving an Afghan army vehicle forced their way onto a U.S. base in eastern Afghanistan and opened fire, killing one civilian contractor and wounding other U.S. troops.

On Saturday, a U.S. military official identified the dead contractor as an American citizen, and added that four U.S. soldiers were injured in the attack. The official said investigators were "95 percent certain it was an insider attack," because the three men came from the Afghan side of the joint U.S.-Afghan base, and rammed an Afghan army Humvee through a checkpoint dividing the base, before jumping out and opening fire on the Americans with automatic weapons. All three attackers were killed.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

The Taliban said it was not behind the Tagab attack, but the group claimed responsibility for the morning attack at the ministry, saying it was meant to send a signal to the U.S. defense chief.

"This attack was a message to him," Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email to reporters.

Pentagon spokesman George Little said Hagel was in a briefing at a U.S.-led military coalition facility in another part of the city when the explosion occurred. He said the briefing continued without interruption.

Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi said the bomber on a bicycle struck just before 9 a.m. local time about 30 meters (yards) from the main gate of the ministry.

A man at the scene, Abdul Ghafoor, said the blast rocked the entire area.

"I saw dead bodies and wounded victims lying everywhere," Ghafoor told AP Television News. "Then random shooting started and we escaped from the area."

The ministry said at least nine civilians were killed and others were wounded.

Reporters traveling with Hagel were in a briefing when they heard the explosion. They were moved to a lower floor of the same building as U.S. facilities in downtown Kabul were locked down as a security precaution.

Ask Engadget: how long should I first-charge a battery?

Ask Engadget how long should I firstcharge a battery

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Bernard, who wants an answer to the age-old question of ensuring you get the most out of your batteries. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"It's said that you should always leave brand-new electronics plugged in for 'a few hours' after being fully charged, but how do you decide that period of time? Is there a calculation depending on the capacity of the battery, or what? Help me, please!"

Nowadays, do you even need to? While memory effect was an issue on NiCad batteries, Lithium Ion units don't suffer from the same issue. It could also be tied to the belief that most chargers only re-juice batteries up to 95 percent, but we can't find any authoritative proof on the matter. Let's turn it over to the electrical engineers and battery experts who read Engadget on a regular basis so we can sort this out, once and for all!
