Easing into the Roleplay

Hi everyone! I've been roleplaying for a couple years now, mostly in MMO's and whatnot. This is my first time on a forum roleplay and I could use a bit of advice. I haven't been catching up much on my roleplay skills, and even though I don't doubt my writing and abilities to make an experience creative, I find all these roleplays and experienced roleplayers a bit daunting. I'm used to very high amounts of fantasy, and I don't think I've actually roleplayed as a human before. So, my question is, how does a new roleplayer get herself into the roleplaying scene here, and any tips for creating my first characters? :)
