Iran Test-Fires Long Range Missiles During Naval Exercise In The Gulf, Semi-Official Fars News Agency Reports

TEHRAN, Dec 31 (Reuters) - Iran test-fired long range missiles on Saturday during a naval exercise in the Gulf, the semi-official Fars news agency said, following a threat by Tehran to close shipping lanes if the West imposes sanctions on its oil exports.

The 10-day naval drill in the Gulf began last week as Iran showed its resolve to counter any attack by enemies such as Israel or the United States.

"Iran test-fired missiles including long range (missiles), surface to sea, ... in the Persian Gulf," Fars said.

Tehran threatened on Tuesday to stop the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf if it became the target of an oil embargo over its nuclear ambitions, a move that could trigger military conflict with countries dependent on Gulf oil.

Tensions with the West have risen since the U.N. nuclear watchdog reported on Nov. 8 that Iran appears to have worked on designing an atomic bomb and may still be pursuing research to that end.

Iran denies this and says it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity to meet growing domestic demand.

During military drills in 2009, Iran test-fired its surface-to-surface Shahab-3 missile, said to be capable of reaching Israel and U.S. bases in the Middle East.

Washington has expressed concern about Tehran's missiles, which include the Shahab-3 strategic intermediate range ballistic missile with a range of up to 1,000 km (625 miles), the Ghadr-1 with an estimated 1,600 km range and a Shahab-3 variant known as Sajjil-2 with a range of up to 2,400 km.

Iranian media have said the naval exercise differed from previous ones in terms of "the vastness of the area of action and the military equipment and tactics that are being employed". (Writing by Ramin Mostafavi; editing by David Stamp)

Droid 4 gets hands-on treatment, but it's simply a dummy unit

The folks over at TechnoBuffalo have just come across a rather interesting specimen -- it's a dummy unit of the forthcoming Droid 4 from Motorola. While its rumored release date has come and gone, non-functional models such as this are commonly offered to consumers in a retail setting to poke and prod to their heart's content. Nonetheless, the hands-on offers a few interesting details, such as a soft touch backside and insight into the redesigned keyboard, which is described as "the best one yet on a Droid handset." Whether we agree with that assertion will be determined come review time, but if you're interested to see the collection of up-close and personal shots with Moto's latest slider, be sure to check the source below.

Lindsay Lohan to Ring in NYE at Dubai Rager?

Despite her claims to have passed on New Year's gigs to focus on turning over a new leaf, Lindsay Lohan will ring in 2012 at a RAGING PARTY in Dubai.

So says an overseas party planning company, at least.

Lohan claims that's complete BS though, and is threatening legal action, saying they're just using her name to promote the event, according to TMZ.

Lindsay is reportedly pissed, and rightfully so, that she's been tied to a NYE bash on the Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise ship in Dubai, since she ain't going.

Lindsay in Black

Her always-busy legal team is pounding out a cease and desist letter claiming that she can and is prepared to sue if they continue to lie about Lohan's NYE plans.

Lohan's rep, Steve Honig, says in a statement:

"Lindsay is not going to Dubai, nor had she ever considered doing so. She will be spending New Year's Eve in L.A. with a few close friends and family."

Sorry, people of Dubai. If you want to overpay to party with a celeb who actually will show up, and be painfully boring, go check out Kim Kardashian at Tao Las Vegas.

Beat the salad bar: Build the ultimate food tower

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV Not all buffets are unlimited. But with some knowledge of math and architecture, you could maximise a single trip to the salad bar by creating a tower of food. In this time-lapse, watch our attempt at packing the most fruit and vegetable pieces onto a single dish. Our strategy was inspired by software engineer Shen Hongrui who devised equations, diagrams and online instructions to help hungry cheapskates accomplish the feat.

The key to building a killer tower is in the foundations. Dry and dense toppings provide a stable base, while placing carrot sticks radially along the bowl's rim help stabilise top layers. Small ingredients like chickpeas are useful for filling the inside of the tower after building walls from cucumber slices or pineapple wedges, for example.

While our tower reached a reasonable height, a quick online search reveals the work of more Tetris-like food architects.

For more on buffet science, check out our festive feature, Salad-bar strategy: The battle of the buffet.

Bucks F Gooden suspended 1 game for flagrant foul (AP)

MILWAUKEE ? Bucks forward Drew Gooden will miss Milwaukee's first home game for his flagrant foul in the season opener.

The NBA said Tuesday that Gooden had been suspended without pay for that night's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Gooden was ejected late in the third quarter Monday for clocking Gerald Henderson in the head with his arm as the Bobcats guard attempted to make a driving layup in Charlotte's 96-95 win.

Gooden scored four points off the bench before his ejection.

The 10th-year veteran averaged 11.3 points and 6.8 rebounds for the Bucks last season.

Hungarian state TV staffers on hunger strike fired (AP)

BUDAPEST, Hungary ? Hungarian media officials say two employees who have been on hunger strike for over two weeks in protest at alleged political meddling with journalists' work in state-funded media have been fired.

MTVA, the state Media Service Support and Asset Management Fund, said Tuesday that Balazs Nagy Navarro and Aranka Szavuly were dismissed because their fast ? in which they have only been ingesting liquids since Dec. 10 ? is illegal and a "provocation" of their employer.

Nagy Navarro told the AP that the dismissals were "shameful and trample on legal security." He said six people were currently taking part in the hunger strike, including another state media employee and three activists.

Several media trade unions and opposition parties repudiated the dismissals.

Turkey angered by French bill to criminalize 'Armenian genocide denial'

The French parliament is expected to pass a bill Thursday dealing with the 1915 killing of Armenians in present-day Turkey.? Any denial could result in a one-year jail term and a $58,000 fine. Turkey is furious.

Nearly 100 years have elapsed since the killing of thousands of Armenians, but the wounds seem far from healed.

The French parliament is to vote on a bill on Thursday making it illegal to deny that the 1915 killing of Armenians during World War I was genocide.? The bill, which is expected to pass, provides for a one-year prison term and a fine of $58,000 (45,000 euros) to anyone who publicly denies it was genocide.?

The vote in the French National Assembly has stirred a diplomatic frenzy and French and Turkish politicians are jumping into the fray.?

?This proposed law targets and is hostile to the Republic of Turkey, the Turkish nation and the Turkish community living in France,? Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish Prime Minister wrote in a letter to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Reuters reports.?

During a Saturday news conference, Mr. Erdogan suggested that France ought to investigate her own role and actions in colonial Africa, including Rwanda.?

Turkey maintains that the proposed bill is a political ploy by Sarkozy's political party to win the votes of 500,000 Armenians in France ahead of next year?s parliamentary and presidential elections. Sarkozy has also been an outspoken opponent of Turkey desire to join the European Union.

Jean Leonetti, the European Affairs Minister of France, dismisses such allegations and says that opposition Socialists will endorse the bill as well. ??It has been nearly 100 years since the Armenian genocide took place, those responsible are dead, it is simply a matter of recognizing a fact of history,? he told Radio Classique, The Telegraph in London reports.

Ersin Onulduran, chairman of the department of international relations at Ankara University, told Today's Zaman, a Turkish daily, that ?only historians and archival experts should pass judgment on the merits of historical events.?

Although there is little consensus, Armenians say that about 1.5 million people were killed during the mass deportations of 1915-16.

The Turkish government acknowledges the death of many Armenians, yet, it denies that Ottoman forces deliberately exterminated them.?? Turkey considers the numbers as inflated and says that Turks were also killed due to the upheaval that followed the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire. ?

Many Turks, disappointed and disillusioned by European delays over entry into the EU, are now embracing a more assertive rhetoric.

?I want to state clearly that such steps will have grave consequences for future relations between Turkey and France in political, economic, cultural and all areas,? Erdogan said according to Reuters.? While Turkey implicitly threatens to boycott French products if the bill passes, it has ruled out imposing trade sanctions.

So far this year, bilateral trade between Turkey and France is estimated at more than $13.5 billion.? About 1,000 French companies operate in Turkey.

"We have to remember international rules and with regard to Turkey it's a member of the WTO (World Trade Organization) and is linked to the European Union by a customs union and these two commitments mean a non-discriminatory policy towards all companies within the European Union," said French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero, Reuters reports.

In 2006, a similar bill was introduced and approved by the French National Assembly but was later dropped by the Senate.? In France, any legislative initiative requires the endorsement of both parliament and the Senate to be enacted.?

Contact allergy affects around 20% of the population in the western world. Scientists are working intensively to develop alternative test methods that do not require animal testing. A research group at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, has now developed a unique test method that enables graded results to be obtained using cultured skin cells.

"We have made several discoveries about the mechanism behind contact allergy, one of which is that allergenic substances react with keratin 5 and 14 in the skin. The skin cells form what are known as "blebs" when exposed to allergenic substances, and this can be used to test whether a substance is allergenic", says Sofia Andersson from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Gothenburg.

Contact allergy affects around 20% of the population in the western world. Metals such as nickel, and substances in perfume and preservatives are among the most common allergenic substances. They are often components of products that are in contact with the skin, such as jewellery, skin lotions and make up. Contact allergy cannot be cured, and an affected person must avoid the allergenic substance, in order to avoid troublesome eczema. This can be a problem if the substance is present in many different products. It is for this reason important to test cosmetic products in order to prevent the development of contact allergy.

The EU has now forbidden the testing of cosmetics and their ingredients on animals. It is, however, not a simple matter to fully replace animal tests. Until now, animal-free tests have only been able to determine whether a substance is allergenic or not such tests have not been able to determine the extent to which a substance causes allergy. Thus, much work remains to be done in developing alternative methods.

"Cultured skin cells are exposed to substances for 24 hours in our test, and then photographed. The number of cells with blebs is then counted. The greater the number of blebbing cells, the more powerful is the allergenic potential of the substance. Thus, our new test has the potential to give a graded reply: it can quite simply determine whether an allergenic substance is extremely, strongly, moderately or weakly allergenic", says Sofia Andersson.

The results can then be used to determine safe concentrations of substances in products that are used in contact with the skin. Since the experiments have given very promising results, the scientists are now working together with GU Holding in developing the test and the analysis method.

Winter storm set to slam Southwest, plains

A severe winter storm is expected to hit southwestern mountains on Sunday afternoon and evening and then move east to dump up to a foot of snow in Kansas, Colorado and the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, weather forecasters said.

New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado are under winter storm warnings. Forecasters warned that some parts of the central and southern plains could see high winds and more than a foot of snow falling at a rate of up to two inches per hour in near-blizzard conditions.

As the United States readies for a week of holiday travel, weather officials warned of dangerous road conditions on Sunday and Monday in the plains. The storm is expected to bring heavy rains and high-elevation snow to the mountains of Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona on Sunday afternoon before moving east.

"It is likely that slippery areas will develop Sunday and progress to the east over the high ground along I-40 in Arizona and New Mexico," meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said on Accuweather.com.

"As snow spills out over the southern High Plains Sunday night and Monday, snow is likely to fall and accumulate in part of I-40 stretching across the northern Texas Panhandle and Route 54 reaching northeastward into southern Kansas."

The mix of rain and snow will move through eastern Kansas on Monday night and into the Chicago and Detroit areas on Tuesday, forecasters said.

(AP) ? Syrian security forces opened fire on anti-government protests after Friday prayers at several locations around the country while the army sent reinforcements into the tense south where military defectors have recently launched deadly attacks on regime troops.

The Local Coordination Committees and the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said one person was killed in the shooting in the restive central city of Homs, and a man who was wounded in the southern province of Daraa earlier in the day died his wounds.

The Observatory said more than 200,000 people marched in different neighborhoods of Homs, denouncing President Bashar Assad's regime. The turnout could not be confirmed as Syrian authorities have banned most journalists from covering events on the ground.

The Observatory also reported shooting near a mosque in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour but it was unclear if there were casualties there.

The LCC said anti-government rallies took place after Friday prayers all across Syria ? from Daraa to the suburbs of the capital Damascus, in Homs and Hama in the country's center, and to the north, in the city of Aleppo.

The protests came a day after Syrian army defectors killed 27 government forces in Daraa in apparently coordinated attacks that were among the deadliest by rebel troops so far.

Syria has seen a sharp escalation in armed clashes recently, raising concerns the country of 22 million is headed toward civil war. The U.N. raised its death toll for the Syrian uprising substantially this week, saying more 5,000 people have been killed since the revolt began.

The LCC said troops deployed in different areas in Daraa on Friday, and that electricity was cut in several locations. Daraa, where the uprising began, has been among the most tense regions in Syria.

Because of the turmoil, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Thursday Canadians living in Syria should leave as soon as possible while commercial flights are still available. Washington issued a similar warning for U.S. citizens in September.

At the United Nations in New York, Russia began circulating a draft Security Council resolution Thursday it said was designed to resolve the conflict in Syria. The draft calls for an end to all violence.

Russia has criticized opponents of Assad's rule for employing violent tactics. Western nations said the Russian draft did not go far enough, because it contained no sanctions against the regime.

Assad, who inherited power from his father in 2000, has denied issuing orders to kill protesters. But New York-based Human Rights Watch said Thursday that dozens of military commanders and officials authorized or gave direct orders for widespread killings and torture.

A look at key exchanges in the GOP debate (AP)

WASHINGTON ? PERRY TURNS TO TEBOW

The gaffe-prone Rick Perry sought strength from an unlikely source Thursday night: Tim Tebow.

The young Denver Broncos quarterback has captured the admiration of football fans across the country after a string of unlikely victories.

"There are a lot of folks that said Tim Tebow wasn't going to be a very good NFL quarterback. There are people that stood up and said, `Well, he doesn't have the right throwing mechanisms,' or he doesn't ? you know, he is not playing the game right," Perry said. "Am I ready for the next level? Let me tell you, I hope I am the Tim Tebow of the Iowa caucuses."

___

ROMNEY LINKS GINGRICH ATTACK TO OBAMA

Newt Gingrich jabbed at Mitt Romney's sometimes-controversial business career to score political points last week. But Romney was ready with an answer ? and a knock on President Barack Obama ? when asked about Gingrich's criticism that he shuttered American companies and laid off employees to make money in the private sector.

"I think the president is going to level the same attack," Romney said. "In the real world that the president has not lived in, I actually think he doesn't understand that not every business succeeds."

Romney said his successes and failures in business would make him a stronger president. And he suggested that Gingrich, like Obama, don't know how the "real economy" works.

"The president I'll look at and say, `Mr. President, how did you do when you were running General Motors as the president, took it over? Gee, you closed down factories. You closed down dealerships.' And he'll say, `Well, I did that to save the business.' Same thing with us, Mr. President. We did our very best to make those businesses succeed."

Expect to hear more of that from Romney on the campaign trail, especially as Democrats and his Republican rivals pour through his quarter-century business career.

___

PAUL, BACHMANN GO TOE TO TOE ON IRAN

Michele Bachmann, in an aggressive exchange with Ron Paul, helped expose what may be his greatest vulnerability among conservative voters: a strongly isolationist foreign policy.

Asked what he would do as president if presented with intelligence that Iran was on its way to possessing a nuclear weapon, Paul questioned why the U.S. has military bases around the world and drones flying over countries like Iran. Bachmann insisted that Iran presents a grave threat to the U.S. and Israel.

"The problem would be the greatest under-reaction in world history if we have an avowed madman who uses that nuclear weapon to wipe nations off the face of the earth," Bachmann said of the Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. On Paul's position, Bachmann was unambiguous: "Nothing could be more dangerous than the comments that we just heard."

Paul got the last word. "You're trying to dramatize this that we have to go and treat Iran like we've treated Iraq and kill a million Iraqis and 8,000 some Americans have died since we've gone to war. You cannot solve these problems with war," he said.

___

"PRETTY PLEASE" POLICY

Obama all but guaranteed an attack line this week when he asked Iran to return a drone that Iran claimed to have brought down in its territory. Romney seized the opportunity and hit it out of the park.

"A strong America is the best ally peace has ever known," Romney said in responding to a question about whether Obama's drone request had appeared timid and possible invited war.

"This is a president with the spy drone being brought down, he says, `Pretty please'? A foreign policy based on `pretty please'? You got to be kidding," Romney said.

Republicans have been eager to paint Obama as weak on foreign policy despite some obvious successes, such as ordering the mission that killed Osama bin Laden. With his answer, Romney guaranteed enthusiastic applause and an oft-repeated slogan, no matter who becomes the Republican nominee.

___

GINGRICH LIKES HOUSES

Defending $1.6 million in payments he received from federal mortgage giant Freddie Mac, Gingrich surprised many observers by insisting that government has a role to play in helping people buy houses.

"I'm not going to step back from the idea that in fact we should have as a goal, helping as many Americans as possible be capable of buying homes," Gingrich said. "There are a lot of government sponsored enterprises that are awfully important and do an awfully good job."

Gingrich's position is anathema to many conservatives who believe Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae played a key role in creating the housing bubble and the 2008 mortgage meltdown. He pushed back at Bachmann's claim that Freddie Mac is a "grandiose scam" that needs to be shut down, saying her allegations about his relationship with Freddie Mac were "factually untrue."

___

BACHMANN PUSHES BACK

Later in the evening, after Gingrich said a second time that Bachmann misstated facts, the Minnesota congresswoman pushed back hard.

"I think it's outrageous to continue to say over and over throughout the debate I don't have my facts right when, as a matter of fact, I do," Bachmann said. "I am a serious candidate for president of the United States. My facts are accurate."

Strong throughout the debate, the Minnesota congresswoman was particularly fearsome when she stood her ground and refused to be patronized. Her subtext was clear: Don't belittle the only woman on the stage.

Bachmann's declaration was impressive, but for one problem: She does misstate facts. Repeatedly.

Politifact, the award-winning, nonpartisan fact-checking website, has cited Bachmann 38 times for false statements.

New Chrome Web Store Proves To Be A Boon For Developers Above (And Below) The Fold

Chrome-StoreFor all the coverage of smartphone proliferation, Android, search, G+, and so on, we haven't heard as much about Google's fledgling web apps market. We're quietly sneaking up on the first birthday of the Chrome Web App Store. Google's browser itself has been quickly gaining ground amongst the competition, as Robin reported last week that Chrome had passed Firefox to become the second largest browser in marketshare, with 25.7 percent. Based on those numbers, both Firefox and IE (which has the top share) have been in seemingly aggressive declines, while Chrome has been growing steadily. As to Chrome's app store, the early reports showed slow growth and sales, but in September the Web Store passed 30 million aggregate users. Then came the redesign.

?Warehouse 13? Holiday Episode Interview With Eddie Mcclintock

It is a very special ?Warehouse 13? holiday episode tonight and it is one you are not going to want to miss trust me. I had the honor of interviewing the hysterical Eddie Mcclintock, who plays the lovable and always in trouble Pete Lattimer yesterday about tonight?s special show. It is all about Pete, which means it is going to be oh so entertaining but it won?t be all laughs according to Eddie. Rachelle: The holiday episode focuses on your character Pete or life without Pete I should say. What was it like to have your character be the main focus of this special show? Eddie: It was great. I love being the center of attention. When I was in college my roommates called me center and it was not a term of endearment. Honestly the episode was a lot of fun. Jack Kenny, who is our executive producer, directed the show. I love that it is kind of our play on It?s A Wonderful Life. We get to see what would have happened if Pete had never existed. Roger Rees comes back and reprises his role as MacPherson. If you watched last year?s episode you?ll notice it is a [...]

Stocks mostly lower after S&P's warning to Europe (AP)

Stocks edged lower in early trading Tuesday after Standard and Poor's warned it might downgrade even Europe's strongest economies.

Overseas markets also sank after the credit rating agency said it is considering downgrades for every nation that uses the euro and isn't already poorly rated. Traders were surprised by threats to Germany and France, which have Europe's strongest economies. S&P criticized their handling of the debt crisis.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 20 points, or 0.2 percent, to 12,077 in the first half-hour of trading. The index was moving between small gains and losses in early trading.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 4, or 0.3 percent, to 1,253. The Nasdaq composite index fell 5, or 0.2 percent, to 2,650.

The S&P warning left out only two of 17 countries that use the euro: Cyprus, whose bonds have near-junk status, and Greece, whose low ratings already suggest it is likely to default soon anyway. Skepticism over a new plan to prevent a breakup of the common currency also dragged markets lower.

S&P's announcement halted a rally in European markets. It came just hours after the leaders of Germany and France unveiled a series of proposals, including punishing governments for overspending, that they hope will persuade the European Central Bank or the International Monetary Fund to lend the euro zone more support. Germany's DAX index fell 1.1 percent, while France's CAC-40 fell 0.4 percent.

The warning also clipped an advance on Wall Street late Monday. The Dow Jones industrial average finished with a gain of 78 points. It had been up 167 points before reports of the S&P action emerged.

In corporate news:

? Darden Restaurants Inc. slumped 9.2 percent, the most in the S&P 500 index, after the company slashed its profit forecast for 2012. The company is trying to turn around its struggling Olive Garden restaurant chain and cope with rapidly rising food costs.

? Manufacturing conglomerate 3M Co. rose 1 percent, the most of the 30 stocks in the Dow average, after the maker of Post-It notes forecast 2012 earnings that were stronger that many analysts were expecting.

Obama defends American faith amid GOP critique (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican Mitt Romney accuses President Barack Obama of considering America "just another nation." To other GOP politicians running for the White House, Obama has apologized for the United States and is presiding over the nation's decline.

Now comes the counteroffensive.

The president of the United States is defending his faith in America, confronting GOP efforts to undercut his leadership and raise questions about his patriotism as he seeks re-election.

In the battle over "American exceptionalism," Obama used a recent trip to Asia to highlight America's role as the strongest and most influential nation on earth. In this election season, responding to the Republican critique is essential for Obama, the only incumbent ever compelled to show a birth certificate to defend his legitimacy.

"Sometimes the pundits and the newspapers and the TV commentators love to talk about how America is slipping and America is in decline," Obama said Wednesday at a New York fundraiser. "That's not what you feel when you're in Asia. They're looking to us for leadership. They know that America is great not just because we're powerful, but also because we have a set of values that the world admires."

"We don't just think about what's good for us, but we're also thinking about what's good for the world," he said. "That's what makes us special. That's what makes us exceptional."

Republicans have seized on "American exceptionalism," a belief among many in the nation that the U.S. is special among global powers, and tried to portray Obama as expressing ambivalence about the promise of his own country. The message resounds with party activists who still admire President Ronald Reagan, who memorialized America as that "Shining City on a Hill" during the 1980s.

"We have a president right now who thinks America's just another nation. America is an exceptional nation," Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, said during a GOP debate in Las Vegas last month. Even his campaign slogan ? "Believe in America" ? suggests that the current president doesn't.

Others have tried to use it to their advantage.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, in an interview with Fox News' Bill O'Reilly last month, said Obama had "traveled around the country making excuses for America, apologizing for America, saying that America is not an exemplary country."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich criticized Obama after 16 Latin American and Caribbean nations filed "friend of the court" briefs in a Justice Department lawsuit against a tough new immigration law in South Carolina, home to an important GOP primary. "It makes you wonder what country does President Obama think he is president of," Gingrich said.

Obama has given detractors ample material for their attacks.

At a San Francisco fundraiser in October, the president talked about the importance of investing in education, new roads and bridges and other ways to build the economy.

"We used to have the best stuff. Anybody been to Beijing Airport lately?" Obama said, asking what has changed. "Well, we've lost our ambition, our imagination, and our willingness to do the things that built the Golden Gate Bridge and Hoover Dam." Republicans picked up on the comments, accusing Obama of calling Americans unambitious.

During a meeting with business executives in Honolulu last month, Obama was asked about impediments to investment in the U.S. He said many foreign investors see opportunity here, "but we've been a little bit lazy, I think over the last couple of decades." The "lazy" comments were quickly turned into an attack ad from Perry.

During a 2009 news conference, Obama was asked whether he subscribed to the concept of American exceptionalism. He said he believed in American exceptionalism, "just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism."

The president said he was "enormously proud of my country" and highlighted the nation's "core set of values enshrined in our Constitution" that ensure democracy, free speech and equality. Words that voters are likely to hear more of during the next year.

A Gallup poll in December 2010 found that 80 percent of Americans thought the U.S. had a unique character that made it the greatest country in the world. The survey found that 91 percent of Republicans agreed with the statement.

In the same poll, 34 percent of Republicans said Obama believed the U.S. was the greatest country in the world, while 83 percent of Democrats said he did.

The American exceptionalism argument has traditionally signaled U.S. strength overseas and the promotion of American values such as freedom of speech and religion. But with Obama's rise, it has taken on a new meaning.

At a time of economic discord, it builds on the notion that America's weakened economy could hurt its standing across the globe. It offers a critique of Obama's foreign policy credentials, even as troops begin heading home from Iraq and the U.S. role in Afghanistan is transitioning.

It also represents a subtle way to question Obama's patriotism, the seeds of which reside in the "birther" movement that questioned the legitimacy of Obama's presidency. Suspicions over Obama's citizenship eventually prompted the White House to produce the president's long-form birth certificate showing he was born in Hawaii.

Yet Democrats don't see this as a debilitating issue for the president, but more a matter of fodder in the Republican primary. Obama, they say, can draw upon it to show optimism in the country.

"Obama is powerful proof of American exceptionalism, that this country has certain set of ideals," said Democratic consultant Bob Shrum. "His election and his presidency is a testament to the character of the country."

Obama has been assertive in recent weeks about America's unique role in the world as it shifts away from conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. During his nine-day Asian trip last month, the president reiterated the U.S.'s growing role in the region and stressed that "American leadership is still welcome."

The Mira

The Mira

Physical Traits

The first thing one thinks of when looking upon a Mira, other than the natural reaction of "Cat", is dominating. Often on the taller and slimmer side rather than bulk, the Mira are the definition of sleek and toned. The males among the Mira average between 5 1/2 feet and 6 1/2 feet tall, with the tallest Mira recorded being 7 foot, one inch. Females are significantly shorter, with the average ranging between 5 and 6 feet in height. The weight of the creatures is far more subject to variable, ranging greatly in width and shape, from lithe to broad of shoulder.

Culture

Rearing:

Children of the Mira are not raised individually by any one parent, but rather in groups and by the entirety of the tribe. It is a shared responsibility to maintain the education and rearing of the young.

Raised in the ways of combat and war from the age they can walk, there is little room for play amongst the children of the Mira. In a society where only the strongest survive little is spared in their education.

The rigorous nature of their upbringing builds strong ties between the young and their caregivers, such that the tribe is parent to them all.

Honor and tradition is paramount to their rearing and diligent care is taken in teaching them the values that every Mira must uphold.

Hierarchy:

The Mira are led by the Shief whos word is law in all matters save for those of the divine in which he must give way to the words of the Shamana. At his right hand stands his second and at his left his mate. Though a predominantly male dominated hierarchy, females with the combat prowess to do so have been known to claim the Right of Power.

Notable Traditions:

Right of Blood:
The Mira hold several traditions in very high regard - the very highest being that no Mira shall kill another Mira. This tradition came about during a period of great turmoil due to extinction that the Mira very narrowly avoided, and in order to maintain their numbers and their war-like, combat-fueled nature, they had to uphold this tradition.

Right of Succession:
Amongst the oldest of their traditions is the right of succession, that a Sheif's cubs will inherit the Sheif's duties and responsibilities, once they are of age and the Sheif has passed on. If there is an overthrowing, or a successful challenge of the Sheif's skills in combat, the offspring are expected to challenge the power of the usurper upon coming of age. However, it is not uncommon for a successful challenger to force the offspring of the old Sheif into exile, for fear of facing an inevitable challenge themselves.

Right of Power:
The Right of Power is another that also dates back to their early years. The Mira respect prowess over all else. Every Mira has the right to hold that which they can seize through power and experience - even the status of Shief. A strict hiearchy is determined through combat prowess and the right for any Mira to challenge another for status and renown. However, the Right of Blood supersedes this and to yield is honorable.

Abilities

Le'thorian's Blessing: Damage resistance and immunity to magic.

Legend tells of a time when the Mira's need was great and their numbers few.

Beset upon by great enemies and with their clans shattered the scattered tribes came together to make a stand. The last of the shamani joined in earnest prayer to beseech the divine aid them in their time of need. Such a joining of shamani that had not occurred since the dawn of the Mira and their voices did not go unnoticed.

As the days darkened and all hope seemed lost, the Mira stood strong through the trials of fire and blood. Even as their days became numbered and the last of their kin wavered beneath the dark magic that ravished the lands, it is said that not one of the Mira broke. Strong of spirit and brave of heart, the Mira met their foes with a ferocity never before seen.

A ferocity of the likes to capture the heart of Le'thorian, last of the ancient woodland spirits and lady of the wood. It is said that she came to them from the divine itself, an answer to their prayers and with her touch a blessing was placed upon the Mira. No longer did the Mira suffer claw and fang for the bite of both upon their hide was turned away. No longer did the Mira fear the void and arcane trickery for every manner of spell and magic placed upon them washed away as if beneath the spring rains.

And so goes the legend of Le'thorian's blessing.

(AP) ? Two giant pandas are flying from China to Scotland, where they will become the first pandas to live in Britain in nearly two decades.

The pandas named Tian Tian and Yang Guang ? or Sweetie and Sunshine ? munched on bamboo at Chengdu airport ahead of their trip Sunday.

The pandas are to stay for 10 years at Edinburgh Zoo, where officials hope they will breed during their stay.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland will pay more than 600,000 pounds ($935,000) a year to China for the loan of Sweetie and Sunshine, not including the expense of imported bamboo.

Britain's last giant panda lived in London Zoo until 1994, when it was returned to China.

According to Android Central, "several" Nexus users have reported receiving the update, bundled in a package that weighs a little less than 1MB. Early reports indicate that the refresh only addresses the volume issue, though it appears to be rolling out on a piecemeal basis. If you've already updated, let us know how it's treating you in the comments, below.
