Avoid These Seven Deadly Dangers Of Outsourcing - Online ...

Here are seven dangers of outsourcing your software development. They become deadly if your career or entire company depends on the timely release of your software.

Danger #1- Ignoring Outsourcing It may seem safer to ignore outsourcing and stick with what has worked well in the past -- hire employee programmers and work with them directly to get your software developed. There are situations where concerns about intellectual property or security make this the only choice. But if you do not have these constraints, then you are wasting money and time by hiring your own programmers.

Danger #2- Hiring the Wrong Team It is a common mistake to look for an outsourcing vendor only in your immediate circle of friends and acquaintances. Considering ONLY your friend's roommate's brother in Bangalore, or his cousin in Kiev, is unlikely to provide you the outsourcing vendor that best matches your software development needs.

Don't hire an outsourcing vendor that will be distracted by developing their own products. The best teams are dedicated to providing software development services for their clients and already have multiple happy clients in the US.

Danger #3- Not Protecting Your Intellectual Property The dangers of not protecting your intellectual property (IP) are multiplied when working with outsourcing. Are you using all three types of IP protection - physical, electronic and legal?

Make sure your outsourcing vendor has a secure facility and uses computers without removable media to reduce the risk of unauthorized access to your IP. Use firewalls, VPN and encryption to protect your IP when in transit over the Internet. Use proper legal protections including written agreements and NDAs that are enforceable in the US. A clearly stated contract helps avoid disagreements later and keeps you from the expense of litigation.

Danger #4- Not Knowing What Your Software Should Do Having good requirements and specifications are key to successful software development, and especially for outsourcing. Fortunately, outsourcing can be successful with only a high-level specification and an outsourced team that can collaborate and communicate with you to determine the details.

Danger #5- Meager Engineering Management Unfortunately, you cannot completely rely on an offshore team to manage your software development. They will do their best to meet commitments to schedules and a high level of quality. You can outsource the programming but not all the responsibility for creating great software.

Danger #6- Mediocre Software Development Methodology How do you go about the process of developing software? Do you create an excruciatingly detailed spec and then micromanage? Do you pile up the features for a single stupendous major release? And do you make sure the offshore team must cram all those features in the software by next Tuesday? If so, you have a mediocre software development methodology.

Do you assume "No News is Good News", if you have not heard from your offshore team? Do you NOT have a standard software release procedure or source code control system? If so, you have a mediocre software development methodology.

Danger #7- Quality as an Afterthought QA is a critical part of the software development process. It is also a major concern when you outsource to programmers that are far away. You cannot wait to start testing until just before you release your software and rush an unacceptable version into use. Having your users find the bugs is a bad strategy.

You don't need to repeat the mistakes of other companies that have tried outsourcing and failed. Avoid these seven deadly dangers take advantage of outsourcing as an effective strategy to develop your software.

ACLU: Legal Voters Questioned On Status In Colorado ? CBS Denver

DENVER (AP) ? U.S citizens are among those who received letters from Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler questioning their right to vote, the American Civil Liberties Union said Tuesday.

The ACLU?s Colorado branch said the voters are among the nearly 4,000 people to whom Gessler sent letters this month asking that they voluntarily withdraw their registration or prove their citizenship.

?I was viscerally upset. You know like how when you feel in your stomach like you just got punched?? Veronica Figoli said about opening the letter. The Denver resident originally from Caracas, Venezuela, said she became a U.S. citizen in September 2011.

Denise Maes, ACLU public policy director in Colorado, said her office has heard from at least 25 U.S. citizens who received letters and that more are coming forward. She said the letters amount to voter intimidation.

Democrats have criticized Gessler, a Republican, for sending the letters and have questioned his political motivations in a state that?s expected to be a presidential battleground.

The vast majority of registered voters who received letters were Democrats or independent voters. Of the nearly 4,000 letters, 1,566 went to Democrats, and 1,794 went to unaffiliated voters. Another 486 letters were sent to Republicans.

Gessler insists his goal is to maintain accurate voter rolls and denies any political motivation. His office maintains that they did not look at voter registration when sending the letters.

Gessler?s office sent the letters to registered voters suspected of being ineligible to vote because they presented documents showing that they were not citizens, such as a green card, when applying for a driver?s license. Some then later appeared in voter rolls, Gessler said.

Rich Coolidge, a Gessler spokesman, said the revelation that some U.S. citizens are among those who received letters was not unexpected.

?We absolutely knew that folks would have been naturalized since showing proof of non-citizenship. We also knew that other voters may not yet have been naturalized,? he said in an email. ?We have safeguards in place and have only removed voters who voluntarily withdrew their registration.?

Gessler said he is using a federal database, which is also in use in Florida, that will allow him to verify the status of people who have since become citizens after getting their driver?s license with a green card or other immigration document. He finalized a deal with the federal government to use the database about a week after he mailed the letters.

His office is having a hearing Wednesday to talk about a process for those who don?t respond.

Figoli, 36, who works in marketing and communications, is among those who haven?t responded.

?I don?t think I should respond because I haven?t done anything wrong,? she said. ?I feel that if I respond, I would be following his game.?

Charmaine Rose, a state government attorney, also received a letter from Gessler and responded affirming that she is a U.S. citizen, but she said she worries about whether her status will continue to be questioned.

?You send in this form and it goes into the ether. Who knows what happens to it,? said Rose, 36. Rose said she is originally from Toronto and became a U.S. citizen in March.

?I happily took the oath to serve this country and say the pledge of allegiance,? she said. ?And immediately the first thing I did was register to vote after the ceremony.?

Heather Smith, a Canadian immigrant from Prince Edward Island who is now a U.S. citizen, said she also received a letter and supports Gessler?s plan.

?I had no problem with it whatsoever. I?m glad that the secretary of state is taking the time to make sure that the rolls are accurate,? said Smith, 50, who became naturalized in 2008 and now owns a business in Carbondale, Colo.

?Honestly, when I received the letter, I didn?t think twice about it,? she said.

Gessler has said there have been people who received his letter who have voluntarily withdrawn. It?s not yet known how many, and his office is expected to release figures this week.

He said that about 2,000 people who once showed proof they weren?t citizens while getting a driver?s license later voted. But his critics say he?s yet to produce evidence of widespread voter fraud.

Maes said her office is monitoring how Gessler?s initiative unfolds, and is working with local voting advocacy groups to find U.S. citizens who received letters.

?Whatever number it is, it?s that many more than any cases of voter fraud Gessler has been able to substantiate,? Maes said. ?So his science experiment has failed. I think ours is working pretty well.?

Coolidge responded by saying ?the ACLU should put as much energy into ensuring the integrity of our elections as they put into scoring political points.?

?The fact is, each voter who confirms his or her citizenship or voluntarily withdraws only helps protect Colorado elections,? he said.

Back to school: Avoiding the "Freshman 15" | NJ.com

College students around the country are starting classes, andf or freshmen this may be a particularly daunting time. If being away from home, adjusting to a new roommate, and taking on a heavier course load weren?t enough, you also have to beware of the infamous "freshman 15"! There are numerous reasons why students gain weight during their first year of college, and here are a couple of suggestions to combat the weight gain.

Make exercise your transportation
Most campuses don?t allow freshmen to park vehicles on campus. This gives you the opportunity to walk or bike to class, the library, student union, and in between dorms. Try to take the bus only when necessary and take advantage of the longer commutes for exercise when you have the time.

Join an intramural sports team
Not everyone can attend college on an athletic scholarship, and many aren?t good enough to make the official university sports teams to compete on a national level. Yet most campuses have intramural sports teams to promote physical activity, fun, and add a sense of community. Joining one of these teams could help you stay in shape as well as make new friends.

Take a physical education class
Universities differ in physical education (PE) requirements, but most of them require that you obtain some credit towards PE in order to graduate. It would be smart to circumvent your way around the freshman 15 by taking a PE class your first semester. Classes are often diverse, from dance, to weightlifting, to swimming, offering whatever you are interested in.

Take advantage of campus fitness
Campuses often have some of the best fitness facilities and equipment, especially if athletically it is a well-funded school. The fitness facilities are usually free to all students, and simply require that you register. These facilities are also often open for long hours, making workouts easy to schedule in between classes and studying.

Watch the late night snacking
Between late night study sessions, long nights partying, and hanging out with friends it is easy to overeat. Ordering pizzas and drinking beer after midnight has been the very habit that has led many to gaining weight so quickly during college. The occasional late night snack won?t hurt you, but making it a regular habit could put on the extra pounds quickly.

De-stress
Stress is often synonymous with student, and is one of the main causes of weight gain. It often contributes to making poor eating decisions. Figure out now healthy ways to combat stress. Try filtering it into exercise like running or yoga.

Get plenty of sleep
For some in college sleep is a luxury. But without it your mind and body doesn?t work as efficiently, slowing down your metabolism, and adding to weight gain. Aim for 8 hours a night. It is possible but requires good time management skills and avoiding procrastination.

Eat Fresh
Without kitchens and the use of hot plates in dormitories it is hard to cook at home. Thus many students resort to eating out or eating microwaveable food. Yet since mini-refrigerators are usually allowed you can stock up on fresh vegetables, ingredients for salad, and fruit. When eating out or at the campus cafeteria try not to go simply for fast food or what?s quick. But try and eat as fresh as possible. Eat well balanced nutrient dense foods, like your mom or dad would make for you at home!

Family of slain US activist awaits verdict

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Almost a decade after their daughter was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer as she tried to block its path in a Gaza Strip conflict zone, Rachel Corrie's parents are preparing for a judge's ruling in their high-profile civil lawsuit against the military.

They hope Tuesday's court decision will conclude a case that's turned their daughter into a rallying cry for pro-Palestinian activists, taken years of their life and drained their savings.

"We are here with a great deal of anticipation for Tuesday," said Corrie's mother, Cindy, 64, a homemaker and musician from Olympia, Washington. "We are hoping for some accountability here for what happened to Rachel."

Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist, was 23 when she was killed in March 2003 while she and other activists sought to block an Israeli military bulldozer in the Gaza border town of Rafah. The driver has said he didn't see Corrie, and that the death was accidental.

Corrie opposed the Israeli military's demolition of Palestinian homes, part of a campaign designed to halt shooting and mortar attacks against soldiers and Jewish settlers traveling in the densely populated border area. According to the U.N. agency handling Palestinian refugees, the military had left more than 17,000 Gazans homeless in the four years after a Palestinian uprising against Israel erupted in September 2000. The demolitions drew international condemnation at the time.

While several foreign activists were killed or wounded in confrontations with the Israeli military during the last decade, Corrie's case has taken on special meaning for Palestinian activists.

For her supporters, she became a symbol of what they say is Israel's harsh repression of nonviolent protest to occupation. They saw in her a young middle class American who died believing that she was defending the homes of strangers. She was a passionate writer whose works showed how deeply moved she was by the suffering she saw around her.

Corrie's parents published those letters, and artists made a play about her life.

Corrie belonged to the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement, whose activists enter conflict zones and try to interfere with activities of Israel's military. Supporters of Israel argue that Corrie, like thousands of other foreign activists, recklessly chose to risk her life.

"Rachel Corrie was injured as a result of her prohibited action, for which she is solely responsible, due to her considerable negligence and lack of caution," the Justice Ministry said in a statement.

The family's case is the first civil lawsuit of a foreigner harmed by Israel's military to conclude in a full civilian trial. Others have resulted in out-of-court settlements.

Since the Corries went to court in 2005, there have been 15 hearings and testimony from 23 witnesses.

They hope the court will apportion blame to the bulldozer driver and his superiors, who have all been cleared of wrongdoing in a military court.

The Corries are seeking a symbolic $1 in damages, along with compensation for the money they've spent bringing the case to trial.

The Corries said their case underscored how difficult it was for families to pursue justice for loved ones killed by Israeli forces.

Criminal convictions of soldiers, who are tried in military courts, are rare. In one case, an Israeli military court in 2005 convicted a former soldier of manslaughter in the shooting of a British activist, Tom Hurndall.

Israeli rights group B'Tselem said in 304 cases where soldiers killed Palestinians, only nine indictments were filed. Another 27 cases were awaiting a decision of the military advocate general and 14 cases were under investigation.

It has "conveyed a message to commanders and soldiers that there is little chance they will be held accountable," said Sarit Michaeli of B'Tselem. The Israeli military declined to comment.

The Corries said they spent over $200,000 of their own savings to fly in witnesses, attend hearings and translate over 2,000 pages of court transcripts. They were supported by an army of volunteers, including lawyers, translators and media activists.

"We found ourselves in a war of attrition with a state against a family. That's what it feels like," said Rachel's father Craig, 65, a Vietnam war veteran and a retired life insurance specialist.

One of the last photographs of Rachel Corrie shows a blonde woman staring pensively into the distance, her pen poised above her notebook, a gray scarf around her neck. It's often turned into a graffiti painting on walls in Gaza.

She's frozen in time, said her father Craig.

"Just think how she would have grown. She would be 33 years old now. And yet in her mind she stopped growing when she was almost 24. It's a strange sort of thing."

It was that memory that kept them going. "I think Rachel would be proud of us," he said.
