Razer's Surround Software Could Turn Regular Headphones Into 7.1 Cans

Razer's Surround Software Could Turn Regular Headphones Into 7.1 Cans

We'd all love to be able to blast sound to the high heavens, but sadly, most of us lack the space and/or patient neighbors willing to put up with it. Well today, gaming gear giant Razer is announcing new software that it claims will be able to turn your ordinary headphones into a professional-grade set that emulates 7.1 channel sound. And from now until the end of the year, the software is free, so why not give it a shot?

Razer's new Surround software uses what's called "virtual surround sound" to create the effect of being actually physically bounded by a seven-channel array of speakers. It accomplishes this magic using processing algorithms that tweak the audio signal coming out of your computer before your headphones drivers actually reproduce the sound.

Razer's Surround Software Could Turn Regular Headphones Into 7.1 Cans

Razer claims that the software will work with any set of headphones, but you'll have to run a calibration program before the effect will work properly. In theory, this could work, but as with any tech that claims to turn one thing into something else it is not, we'll believe it when we hear it.

Now the software isn't exactly "free" per se. In exchange for the software, Razer is asking that users make a contribution to Child's Play, a charity that supports children in hospitals. Seems like a worthy cause. If you wait until 2014 to buy the software, you'll pay the regular cost of $20 to Razer. Bottom line: If you're into PC gaming, but not into spending a lot on gaming headset, the Surround software seems like it could be worth a shot.

Exclusive: Japan's Meiji Yasuda nears deal for Thai Life stake - sources

By Taiga Uranaka and Denny Thomas

TOKYO/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Co has entered into exclusive talks to buy a 15 percent stake in Thai Life Insurance Co for around $700 million, people familiar with the matter told Reuters, as Japanese insurers step up their presence in Southeast Asia.

Meiji Yasuda, Japan's second-largest life insurer by premium income after Nippon Life Insurance Co, beat Sumitomo Life Insurance Co to enter final negotiations, in an auction that had attracted private equity firms Carlyle Group , KKR & Co and CVC Capital Partners, the people said.

A deal is expected as early as next week, one person familiar with the matter said.

If successful, Meiji Yasuda's purchase will make it the fourth financial services acquisition by a Japanese firm in Southeast Asia this year, bringing the year-to-date total value of Japanese M&A deals in the region to $6.6 billion.

Rising personal income in Southeast Asia is giving, for the first time in many cases, individuals and families the ability to afford insurance. That new demand has boosted stock prices and corporate valuations, culminating in a spate of M&A transactions.

To tap into that growth, Japanese insurers and banks have turned aggressive buyers of Southeast Asian financial services companies as they battle sluggish growth in their home market.

Meiji Yasuda officials were invited to Thailand recently for the discussions, while Sumitomo Life was told that the process has temporarily ended for them, a second source said.

A Meiji Yasuda spokesman declined comment, while Thai Life officials were unavailable for an immediate comment.

JAPAN INC

Unlisted Thai Life, the country's second-biggest life insurer, is selling a minority stake to help fund the next stage of its growth.

The stake sale is set to be Thailand's third insurance deal in the past year, with at least two more insurance deals said to be brewing in Southeast Asia.

Facing slow growth at home, Japan's financial services industry, as well as other sectors, have bought into Southeast Asian businesses to expand abroad, often taking minor stakes.

Japan's biggest lender Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) is in advanced talks to buy a majority stake in Thailand's Bank of Ayudhya for over $4 billion.

In a related deal, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group agreed in May to acquire a $1.5 billion stake in Indonesia's BTPN .

Southeast Asia has emerged as a key battleground for global and regional insurers, with international companies attracted by the region's rapidly growing market.

Last year, Prudential Plc struck a $590 million deal to buy the insurance unit of Thailand's Thanachart Bank, and Hong Kong businessman Richard Li bought ING's operations in Hong Kong, Macau and Thailand.

All those deals have boosted insurance M&A in Southeast Asia to a record $13.1 billion last year, compared with a total of $3.9 billion in the previous four years, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Swiss Re Economic Research & Consulting forecasts that life insurance premiums in emerging Asia - a region comprising of seven countries, including China, India, Malaysian, Thailand - will grow at a compounded annual rate of 8.5 percent between 2011 and 2021 to $631 billion. By contrast, premiums in industrialized countries will expand 2.9 percent in the same period.

Meiji Yasuda's discussions for buying a minority stake comes just weeks after another Japanese company Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co Ltd agreed to purchase a 40 percent stake in Indonesia's Panin Life for $337 million.

Thai Life had 15.3 percent of the country's life insurance market with annualized premium equivalent of 6.2 billion baht ($202 million) as of the end of the second quarter of 2011, according to Thai Life Assurance Association data.

Thai Life is controlled by the Thailand's Chaiyawan family.

Barclays is advising Thai Life on the sale, according to a previous Reuters report.

FTC Antitrust Google Waze Deal - Business Insider

google Larry Page and Sergey Brin

REUTERS/Chip East

Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are recognized for their efforts at the conclusion of the Clinton Global Initiative in New York, September 22, 2006. Former US President Bill Clinton's annual event brings together world leaders from business, government and philanthropy to try to solve world issues.

?

Google has been contacted by the Federal Trade Commission over their $1.1 billion purchase of mobile mapping app Waze ? sparking off an antitrust investigation into whether the deal would have adverse effects on competition in the marketplace, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The search giant edged out Facebook to purchase the Israeli startup on June 11. In Google's official announcement, they wrote of enhancing Google maps with Waze's traffic update features, as well as using it to improve Google search.

From WSJ:

Lawyers familiar with government antitrust investigations say the FTC may have asked Google not to integrate with Waze, pending its review.

The FTC would have to determine whether Waze would have become a head-to-head competitor with Google, whose Google Maps software is the dominant digital mapping and navigation service around the world, or whether there is any evidence, such as emails, that showed Google wanted to acquire the company only to keep it from rivals.

The FTC did not comment on the matter, and other than to confirm they had been contacted, Google also declined comment to WSJ.

Former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland is officially a married man!

The rocker said "I do" to photographer girlfriend Jamie Wachtel Saturday night at their Los Angeles home, according to PEOPLE. "We had the most beautiful, heartfelt ceremony," Wachtel tells the mag.

The bride donned a vintage dress from Paper Bag Princess in Beverly Hills and the groom looked dapper in John Varvatos as they exchanged their Pade Vavra rings.

The Wildabouts rocker first met his now wife back in 2011 while filming music videos for his Christmas album. Scott told Billboard last year he knew when he met Jamie he'd be falling in love with her.

While on the music video shoot, Jamie told him "to tuck in your belly a little bit." He laughs: "It was around the holidays-it was after Thanksgiving, and you know how that tends to be. I was kind of caught off guard, and I started laughing and she started laughing. And I don't know ... something magical happened."

She then gave the rocker a ride home when he "just thought, 'I have a feeling that I am going to fall in love with this woman.'"

Sunday Spotlight: Rep. Tulsi Gabbard

This week's "Sunday Spotlight" shines on a freshman congresswoman with a unique resume. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) is an Iraq war veteran, the first Hindu member of Congress, and the youngest woman serving in Congress, at age 32.

Gabbard told ABC's "This Week" that she doesn't mind standing out on Capitol Hill.

"Someone asked me recently when I went back to Hawaii - they said, 'So, you know, how's it going in Congress? Are you fitting in there?'" Gabbard said. "And I told them not fitting in is actually a good thing."

Gabbard served two tours of duty in the Middle East and said her military service gives her a unique perspective in Washington.

With the military planning to integrate women into combat units by 2016, Gabbard reflected on her own experience in Iraq.

"During my deployment, there were missions that I volunteered for and was not allowed to go on, simply because I'm a woman," Gabbard said. "They said, 'Sorry, no. No girls allowed.'"

Gabbard argued that there should be equality on the front lines.

"As long as we've had a United States military in place, women have been raising their hands to serve our country," Gabbard said.

"If you can pull your weight and if you can do the job, you should be able to do it," she continued. "What we see in the policy change, now that we're seeing starting to be executed, is just a reflection of what women have already been doing in the military."

While critics argue that men and women don't have the same abilities to handle the challenges of war, Gabbard said she and her fellow servicewomen recognize the harsh realities of combat.

"Some of the so-called uncivilized parts of what occurs when you are in combat, when you're at war, that's the reality that we train for," Gabbard said. "This is not something new and it's not something that any woman who raises her hand to serve in uniform finds as a surprise. We know what we sign up for."

Another issue facing the military is the rate of sexual assault, highlighted by rising statistics and recent high-profile cases. Lawmakers are currently moving forward with legislation designed to curb the number of sexual assaults in the military.

abc tulsi gabbard this week jt 130622 wblog Sunday Spotlight: Rep. Tulsi GabbardABC News

On "This Week," Gabbard urged lawmakers and military leaders to address the skyrocketing number of sexual assaults in the military.

"That just places a greater responsibility on those in leadership to do something about this," she said. "We have to do something about this now."

Gabbard said that being concerned about sexual assault while serving in the military was "an eye-opening experience."

"When I was deployed to Iraq, we heard and saw incidents that were being reported or incidents that were occurring within our camp," Gabbard said.

She also spoke about preventative measures in place during her tours of duty.

"We got issued rape whistles so that, you know, as we walk out of our tent or walk out of our hooch, we've got our body armor, we've got our helmet, our weapon, and we've got our rape whistle," Gabbard explained.

When she's not speaking out on behalf of servicemen and women, the Democratic rising star travels over ten hours to her home district in Hawaii.

"You can smell the ocean breezes as soon as you get off the plane," she said. "Immediately I feel my shoulders drop, the stress goes away."

Gabbard said time spent in Hawaii allows her to escape the hustle and bustle of Washington and "hold on to the aloha spirit."

"I hold on very tightly to my surfboard when I'm home," Gabbard said smiling. "I appreciate having the opportunity to not only be home, but to understand why I'm working in Washington."

Gabbard first assumed public office in 2002, when she was elected as a Hawaii state legislator at the age of 21, and today believes that the "next generation" of leaders can make a big impact.

Check out our web extra HERE for Gabbard's thoughts on being a freshman representative and the need for bipartisanship on Capitol Hill.

The congresswoman is also featured in the upcoming issue of Vogue magazine, which hits newsstands on June 25.

Prosecutor opens with Zimmerman's obscenity

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? A prosecutor began opening statements in George Zimmerman's trial Monday with obscene words the neighborhood watch volunteer whispered under his breath while following 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

"F------ punks," prosecutor John Guy said to six female jurors, quoting Zimmerman from a call he made to a police dispatcher shortly before his fatal confrontation with Martin. "These a-------. They always get away."

Guy told the jurors that Zimmerman profiled Martin "as someone about to commit a crime in his neighborhood."

"And he acted on it. That's why we're here."

Zimmerman followed Martin through his neighborhood, confronted him and then fatally shot him during a fight, Guy said.

"George Zimmerman didn't shoot Trayvon Martin because he had to," Guy said. "He shot him for the worst of all reasons: because he wanted to."

The prosecutor described Zimmerman as someone who wanted to be a police officer, and he dismantled the story Zimmerman has told investigators about what happened during the fight between the neighborhood watch volunteer and the Miami-area teen that left Martin dead from a bullet to his chest.

Zimmerman's claim that Martin had his hands over the neighborhood watch volunteer's mouth is false since none of Zimmerman's DNA was found on Martin's body, Guy said. The prosecutor also said Zimmerman's claim that he had to fire because Martin was reaching for his firearm is false since none of Martin's DNA was on the gun or holster.

Zimmerman is pleading not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming self-defense. His defense attorney was to present his opening statements following those of the prosecution.

On Feb. 26, 2012, Zimmerman spotted Martin, whom he did not recognize, walking in the gated townhome community where Zimmerman and the fiancee of Martin's father lived. There had been a rash of recent break-ins and Zimmerman was wary of strangers walking through the complex.

The two eventually got into a struggle and Zimmerman shot Martin in the chest with his 9mm handgun. He was charged 44 days after the shooting, only after a special prosecutor was appointed to review the case and after protests. The delay in the arrest prompted protests nationwide.

Two police dispatch phone calls will be important evidence for both sides' cases.

The first is a call Zimmerman made to a nonemergency police dispatcher, who told him he didn't need to be following Martin.

The second 911 call captures screams from the confrontation between Zimmerman and Martin. Martin's parents said the screams are from their son while Zimmerman's father contends they belong to his son.

Nelson ruled last weekend that audio experts for the prosecution won't be able to testify that the screams belong to Martin, saying the methods the experts used were unreliable.

Malaysia declares emergency as Indonesia smoke pollution thickens

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia declared a state of emergency in two parts of the southern state of Johor on Sunday as smoke from land-clearing fires in Indonesia pushed air pollution above the level considered hazardous.

The illegal burning of forests and other land on Indonesia's Sumatra island, to the west of peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, to clear space for palm oil plantations is a chronic problem during the June-September dry season.

The "haze" caused by fires in Riau province on Sumatra has also shrouded neighboring Singapore but air quality in the city state improved over the weekend after reaching hazardous levels there.

"Prime Minister Najib Razak has agreed to declare emergency status in Muar and Ledang with immediate effect," Malaysian Natural Resources and Environment Minister G. Palanivel said in a Facebook post.

Palanivel said the air pollution index in the two districts had exceeded 750. A reading above 300 indicates that air pollution is hazardous.

Neither Palanivel nor the prime minister's office could be reached for comment.

A spokesman at the Johor state operations center told Reuters that it was awaiting orders from the National Security Council and that residents in the affected areas should stay indoors.

Indonesian officials have deflected blame by suggesting companies based in Malaysia and Singapore may be partly responsible. Malaysia-listed Sime Darby and Singapore's Wilmar Group both deny the charge.

Being sole minority employee doesn't mean special protection ...

How often have you worried about disciplining the only employee who belongs to a particular protected class? You probably feared that the employee would sue, alleging bias.

Relax. Being the only black ? or Asian ? or female employee doesn?t confer any particular advantage in a discrimination lawsuit. The employee she still has to prove that the discipline was related to the protected status.

Recent case: Elizabeth worked in HR and earned steady promotions. She was the only Asian in the department. When a new supervisor arrived on the scene, Elizabeth?s performance evaluations progressively grew worse and eventually she was demoted to file clerk.

Elizabeth sued, alleging race and national-origin discrimination.

But the court said she had no evidence her status caused her demotion. Being the only Asian wasn?t enough. (Tsang-Adler v. City of New York, No. 12-CV-394, ED NY, 2013)
