The art of ceramics, food and cocktails at Make. Eat. Drink.

make.eat.drink.

It?s pretty obvious that I?m a huge fan of well-made, hand-crafted wine, beer, spirits and cocktails. I?m also an art lover and get a rush for wandering through exhibits and galleries. Fortunately Beautiful Wife shares these passions.
Why not combine the two loves?

Could there possibly be a better way to enjoy the artistic creation of craft cocktails and food than having it served in artisan-made cups and plates? Probably not. You can find out just how good it is at Make. Eat. Drink., a featured event of the?East Austin Studio Tour?(E.A.S.T.),?on Tuesday November 13 at the??East Side Glass Studios, 507 Calles Street (the same building as Hops & Grain).

Here is your chance to sample delectable eats lovingly made by Andrew Francisco, chef of Bridget Dunlap?s soon to be opened place, Mettle East Side Bistro. Elegant libations, courtesy of Contigo, will be served at a bar custom-made for the event by Petrified Design. The hottness is that the goodies will be served in ceramics made by E.A.S.T. artists, Keith Kreeger?of Keith Kreeger Studios, Leigh Taylor Wyatt and Shara Funari of Eastside Glass and Ryan McKerley. You get to keep your handmade cup at the end of the event.

McKerley Tumblers East Side Glass Studios owners Shara Funari and Leigh Taylor Wyatt are excited to host the event. Funari said, ?We are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase the Boom Gallery space of East Side Glass Studio for Make. Eat. Drink. Joining forces with other artists/concepts of design allows me to utilize the medium of hot glass with purpose and intention.?

Ceramic artist and event organizer, Keith Kreeger says ?I?m a firm believer that food and drink loving culture that is prevalent in Austin has the same affinity for fine things that craft lovers culture has. I?ve never met a craft lover that doesn?t go to the farmers market for fresh ingredients to cook their own meals. This event let?s foodies and drink aficionados appreciate how much more they can enjoy their fantastic food on hand-made functional art. The rituals and experience of hand-crafting food and drink is more complete when combined with the craftsmanship of a handmade dish. The details of a cup and how it feels on your lips can be as important to your experience as flavors you taste in a drink.?

Kieth Kreeger Studios
Kreeger continued, ?Pottery and craft is moving more to the luxury goods market which is connected with the foodie movement. Our generation understands that the things we have in our homes should be of the same quality the food we serve on it.?

Grab you tickets?for $100, and eat, drink, admire art and get a handmade cup by a Make. Eat. Drink artist. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Big Medium and the East Austin Studio Tour.

Sponsors include: Big Medium, Contigo, Mettle, Mockingbird Domestics, Keith Kreeger Studios and East Side Glass Studios.

What are you drinking??

"I'd really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry," he told the crowd. "Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment."

McGillis, who was married twice to men and has two daughters, said, "It's a part of being true to yourself. That's been a challenge for me personally."

  • Jim Parsons, 2012

<em>New York Times </em>scribe Patrick Healy confirmed "The Big Bang Theory" star's sexuality<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/27/theater/jim-parsons-prepares-for-his-lead-role-in-harvey.html?_r=1" target="_hplink"> as part of a profile</a>. The revelation came late in the article, when Healy describes the 39-year-old actor's role in the 2011 revival of Larry Kramer's HIV/AIDS crisis drama, "The Normal Heart." Wrote Healy: '"The Normal Heart" resonated with him on a few levels: Mr. Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship, and working with an ensemble again onstage was like nourishment, he said." Though the <em>Times </em>didn't identify Parsons' partner, he has been romantically liked with art director Todd Spiewak (pictured).

  • Anne Burrell, 2012

They have been together for a couple of years and spend a lot of time together."

  • Anderson Cooper, 2012

Anderson Cooper's sexuality had been <a href="http://www.out.com/entertainment/2008/09/22/glass-closet">scrutinized for years</a> but it wasn't until July 2012 that he finally addressed the issue when he <a href="http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2012/07/anderson-cooper-the-fact-is-im-gay.html">came out in an email </a> to his friend and fellow journalist, Andrew Sullivan, this summer. In Cooper's message, which was posted on Sullivan's blog, "The Dish," on <em>The Daily Beast</em>, the CNN anchor states, "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn?t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."

  • Gillian Anderson, 2012

The 43-year-old mother of three, who's long enjoyed a sizable lesbian fanbase, told <em>Out</em> that she first had a relationship with a woman while still in high school, after moving from her native England to suburban Michigan. "If I had thought I was 100 percent gay, would it have been a different experience for me?" Anderson, who was voted "Most Bizarre" and "Most Likely to Be Arrested" in high school, ponders. "Would it have been a bigger deal if shame had been attached to it and all those things that become huge life-altering issues for youngsters in that situation? It's possible that my attitude around it came, on some level, from knowing that I still liked boys."

I have lived my life very openly and have never hidden the fact that I am gay!"</blockquote>

Our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country."</blockquote>

In <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/elton-john-lonely-at-the-top-rolling-stones-1976-cover-story-20110202" target="_hplink">an interview</a> with <em>Rolling Stone</em> in October 1976, the rock star came out by saying, "There's nothing wrong with going to bed with somebody of your own sex. Sykes said in part: <blockquote>"I got married Oct. 25, I don't really talk about my sexual orientation, I felt like I was living my life, I wasn't in the closet, but I was just living my life. Everybody who knows me personally, they know I'm gay. And that's the way people should be able to live our lives, really. We shouldn't have to be standing out here demanding something we automatically should have as citizens of this country."</blockquote>

Now it seems there is speculation and interest in my private life and relationships. So, rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love." </blockquote>

  • Chaz Bono, 2009

Chaz Bono revealed his plan to transition in May 2009. He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones. Don't be shy about that. Seriously. You shouldn't be shy about that because every time...an actor like you is helping a zillion other people that are scared to talk about their sexuality so good for you." Chris Colfer: "Thank you. You know what my answer to that question was prior to coming out -- was that I was straight as every other actor in Hollywood."

It was my choice, too, because I was a bit worried about it but now I don't really give a shit. You can't hide away forever. It's just stupid and now I've come out I feel a lot more comfortable with myself. But it was a bit scary back then because some people do have horrible opinions."</blockquote>

Are these songs about my relationship with a man? I say yeah. And it?s only through my music that I?ve found the strength to come to terms with my sexuality beyond the context of just my lyrics. This is my real life."</blockquote>

(AP) ? Paula Broadwell first met fellow West Point graduate David Petraeus in the spring of 2006, when she was a graduate student at the Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

He was a lieutenant colonel working on a counterinsurgency manual that would be tested during his command in Iraq. The university had invited him to give a speech.

Broadwell was in the Army Reserve after being recalled three times to active duty since the Sept. 11 attacks to work on counterterrorism issues and intended to return to active duty or get into the policy world, according to the preface of the Petraeus biography she would later write with a Washington Post editor.

Petraeus, who held much-praised military commands in Iraq and Afghanistan, resigned Friday after admitting he had an extramarital affair, a disclosure that ended the retired four-star general's civilian career as director of the CIA.

He carried on the affair with Broadwell, now 40, according to several U.S. officials with knowledge of the situation who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss publicly the investigation that led to the resignation. The FBI discovered the relationship by monitoring Petraeus' emails, after investigators were alerted that Broadwell may have had access to his personal email account, two of the officials said.

Broadwell wrote in the preface to "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus," published by Penguin in January, that while at Harvard, Petraeus passed along his card and offered to help her academic work on leadership.

"I later discovered that he was famous for this type of mentoring and networking, especially with aspiring soldier-scholars," Broadwell wrote, adding that "I took full advantage of his open-door policy to seek insight and share perspectives."

Broadwell is a research associate at Harvard's Center for Public Leadership and a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, according to her biography on Penguin's website. According to the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer, she grew up in North Dakota and moved to Charlotte more than three years ago with her husband, a radiologist, and their two young sons.

The book began as research for her dissertation, a case study of Petraeus' leadership. It evolved into an authorized biography written with Washington Post editor Vernon Loeb after President Barack Obama put Petraeus in charge of Afghanistan in 2010.

Two years earlier, she wrote in the book's preface, while visiting Washington he had invited her to join him and his team for a run along the Potomac River.

"I'd earned varsity letters in cross-country and indoor and outdoor track and finished at the top of my class for athletics at West Point; I wanted to see if he could keep stride during an interview. Instead it became a test for me," she wrote. He eventually increased the pace "until the talk turned to heavy breathing, and we reached a 6-minute-per-mile pace. It was a signature Petraeus move. I think I passed the test, but I didn't bother to transcribe the interview."

In the Army Reserve, she specialized in military intelligence, spending time at the U.S. Special Operations Command and the FBI Counterterrorism Task Forces before pursuing an academic career, according to her Penguin bio. She "lived, worked, or traveled in more than 60 countries during more than 15 years of military service and work in geopolitical analysis and counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations," her bio states.

Broadwell made multiple trips to Afghanistan, with unprecedented access to Petraeus, and also spent time with his commanders across the country.

When Petraeus left the military and took the job at the CIA, Broadwell kept in contact with him and sometimes was invited to his office for events such as his meeting with actress Angelina Jolie.

"History has yet to fully judge Petraeus' service in Iraq and Afghanistan, his impact on the U.S. military and his rank among America's wartime leaders," Broadwell wrote in the preface. "But there is no denying that he achieved a great deal during his 37-year Army career, not the least of which was regaining the strategic initiative in both wars" after Sept. 11, 2001.

"His critics fault him for ambition and self-promotion. I will note in the pages that follow that he is driven and goal-oriented, but his energy, optimism and will to win stand out more for me than the qualities seized on by his critics."

With the book done, Broadwell told friends she was returning to her dissertation, using part of her research on Petraeus to complete her doctorate.

Skype in the workspace caters to small business

Many people were aghast when Microsoft forked over a hefty $8.5 billion in May of 2011 to purchase Skype. The software giant took awhile to get going with its new toy, but now we are starting to see the results. Microsoft announced a brand new platform set to improve communications for small business.

Skype in the workspace?connects these companies to customers, partners and suppliers all around the world. The best part may be?the price -- "It's a free-to-use online platform for small businesses and entrepreneurs" states Skype's Ural Cebeci. So far, so good.

Microsoft provides experts and consultants to help a small business get up and running and even promote its new page via social media. Still good...

Microsoft also purports that the new service will work well for more established places that don't require all of the promotion of a startup. Additionally, there are already hundreds of new business relationships that can be made, and even some promotional tools, to help you further that business, be it new or established. Better...

The company asserts that an individual user with an existing Skype account can build on that to add all of the tools he or she needs to grow regardless of location or industry. Subscribers can then get started inviting customers for feedback, as well as showing off products?and?services to potential partners and even?place orders with distributors. Great!

All cool stuff huh? So what could possibly go wrong?

Sure, the service could save a young business a lot of money on communications costs with something like a PBX system. It also has the?potential?to make phone companies a bit nervous. But the service is new and untested in the target market. Still, it's promising. I'm hopeful.
